Total Time ::: 51:26
::: Lo-fi but sorta steady, so GRIN & bear it if you can! Check samples for NOMHD (not on my hard drive) or DMGA "DeSiRe MoRe gRiN ASAP" considerations.
::: Warts: Repaired dullspots & dropouts but surely missed a few. Some distortion. Low frequency response. This is the less muffled (better) Mk2 version but it still lacks clarity. Quality changes a few times but all same show- #01 worst (canned sound), #02-07 not great, then improves #08-13 & clearest #14-19 (different tape? microphone raised/moved?). #07 had 3second gap (now w/so-so patch). #16 end fade abrupt cut now patched.
::: CONTRAST CLAUSE: This is the better Mk2 WITH EQ+NR version version. The Mk1 NO EQorNR version is available elsewhere.
::: Showtime 8pm. Tix $3 for students. Grin opened for Quicksilver Messenger Service.
::: Believed to be entire set unless song missing after "Like Rain" tapeflip (but unlikely).
::: #15 Anyone know the proper title for this classical piece and/or is it a Nils original?
::: In Grin years, "Like Rain": A) sometimes had no intro (except Nils solo song beginning) // B) segued from a Nils solo electric rock guitar intro (sometimes VERY heavy) // C) segued from a classical piano piece // D) ike this version, segued from a solo piano (or electric guitar like on 1972-12-01) version of the song Nils wrote for his pre-Grin band, Paul Dowell&The Dolphin, "It's Better To Know You"(1969 Sire 45 A-side) // E) in the last year, sometimes segued from "Believe" (or even both C&D as on 1973-04-06).
::: #19, a common Grin show closer, is an unissued song sometimes titled "Thunderbird", but is likely "Celebration". Anyone know for sure?
::: Grin was touring to support their newest album, "All Out", recorded '72 & released Feb.'73.
::: Does anyone have the QMS set? Likely it was captured by this taper (tho' taper clearly into Grin).
::: "So long as Grin keeps recording, there will be reason to smile." (source unknown '71 1st LP review).
::: Astonishing/sadly, Grin still doesn't even have their own Wikipedia page, nor gets more than a single paragraph in Nils' entry. WTF?

Recording Information ::: unknown cheap mono tape recorder/mike -> master mono tape -> unknown analog-only generations -> unknown generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B on.
Playback 2020-01-13 ::: unknown generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi 680ZX cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth adjusted for individual tape, heads cleaned & demagnetized -> Sony Linear PCM Recorder PCM-M10 (LPCM 44.10kHz/16bit WAV files) -> computer -> Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset, channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, assorted pitch (speed) fixes with single pass per segment after frequency analysis & with pitchpipe verification, several differential equalisation settings used on different segments (but lightly as due to low fidelity it took caution not to create new issues), lite noise reduction applied to reduce hiss] (used only the much better left channel of mono recording after patching) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. Freed 2021-12-xx.
Line-up ::: Nils Hilmer Lofgren - electric guitar, piano, vocals // Tommy Lofgren - electric guitar, vocals // Bob Gordon - electric bass, vocals // Bob Berberich - drums, vocals.
Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.
DimeTravel 587 ::: Thanks to the original taper & traders! THANKS to DIMERS elegymart, Syrinx, AlexPhoenix, TheBigA for their GRIN input in various ways. Thanks to DIMER gv0000 for his ever-helpful research assistance. ::: Corrections welcome ::: Quite standard Grin set from the era with regular opener right on through closing with "End Unkind" & "Celebration". Too bad it's not clearer, but it's pretty steady once you get acclimated. After the 3rd song, it's pretty clear a lot of folks think they are playing too loud. Band response - turn up the monitors! I'm not a musician, but I can hazard a guess that the bass may have been out of tune for most of the set as setting the pitch on this one didn't really make sense - not a normal problem with Grin (& maybe I'm wrong). When I set the tuning for the guitars, they matched album versions, but the bass frequencies wouldn't line up 'til the last 2 songs. Near the end of all my Grin remastering when I worked on this, but enjoyed it all the same, even after 6+ weeks of little else but Grin! Craziest project I've ever taken on. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees
