::: VG+ AUD & a very HEAVY Grin gig. Check samples to decide to run&hide or for help holdin' onto your horses.
::: Warts: Repaired dullspots & dropouts but surely missed a few. #04 some bass distortion (show VERY loud as heard from AUD&band). #09 2sec gap near end seamlessly spliced. #15 last min some tiny speed fluctuations.
::: CONTRAST CLAUSE: This is the more delicious Mk2 WITH EQ+NR version. The the Mk1 NO EQorNR version is available elsewhere.
::: DON'T SKIP THIS DUE TO QUALITY~FULL-BORE~LOADS OF SUPERB GUITAR PLAYING! TRY THE Mk2 VERSION.
::: Tape said"1974-04-17 Roxy Early&Late".Northampton Roxy venue confirmed by WSAN DJ talk at start of this Late Show.
::: DATE CORRECTION to 1974-03-20 to match newspaper advertisements (info courtesy of DIMER gv0000).
::: Tho' short, seems to be full main set w/only tapeflip cut between songs ~40mins; but likely missing encore(s).
::: #11 "The Lovin' Moon"aka"Done With The Weather"aka"title unknown"! EXC unissued Nils song. 2 known versions. This 6min one maybe 1st performance.Nils working out (&forgets) lyrics, which change by 1974-04-06 Doylestown where it's 9mins&more worked out. Too bad it left his repertiore as it's got a lot goin' on. Also a REAL shame there isn't a better quality version around so we can the song more clearly. Can YOU upgrade this and/or identify the actual song title?
::: So far, these are the earliest known versions of "Duty"/"Keith Don't Go (Ode To The Glimmer Twin)"/"The Lovin' Moon"(?).
::: Left in countdowns on a few of these songs; usually I track them out, but they have a lot of character here.
::: 11 minutes (2 songs) of The Roxy Early Show also circulates. Do you have more of either one or possible upgrades?
::: Nils 1st night at The Roxy, less than 3 months before Grin's farewell gig ~ Washington, DC 1974-06-08.
::: Most recent LP was 4th&last"Gone Crazy".Wikipedia says issued Oct.'73,but 1973-11-24 is 1st"Cash Box"review&"Billboard"listing.
::: Part of WSAN-FM"Concert Series"(but not broadcast on the radio). Opening band unknown. Do you remember?
::: Tommy asks if people, "ever streak around here". Huge fad in USA in this era,"the act of running nude thru a public area for publicity,as a prank,as a dare,or as a form of protest"(Wikipedia).Dec.'67 Time magazine article raised national awareness&thruout '74 it was hoppin'.Tommy says they hope some people will streak down in front!
::: In Grin years, "Like Rain": A) sometimes had no intro (except Nils solo song beginning) // B) like this version, segued from a Nils solo electric rock guitar intro (sometimes VERY heavy) // C) segued from a classical piano piece // D) segued from a solo electric guitar version of the song Nils wrote for his pre-Grin band, Paul Dowell&The Dolphin, "It's Better To Know You"(1969 Sire 45 A-side) // E) in the last year, sometimes segued from "Believe" (or even both C&D as on 1973-04-06).
::: "So long as Grin keeps recording, there will be reason to smile." (source unknown '71 1st LP review).
::: Astonishing/sadly, Grin still doesn't even have their own Wikipedia page, nor gets more than a single paragraph in Nils' entry. WTF?

Recording Information ::: unknown mono tape recorder/microphone -> master tape -> unknown analog-only generations -> unknown generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B on.
Playback 2020-02-14 ::: unknown generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi 680ZX cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth adjusted for individual tape, heads cleaned & demagnetized -> Sony Linear PCM Recorder PCM-M10 (LPCM 44.10kHz/16bit WAV files) -> computer -> Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset, channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, assorted pitch (speed) fixes with single pass per segment after frequency analysis & with pitchpipe verification (seems like deck was unstable), with differential equalisation, lite noise reduction applied to reduce hiss] (NOTE: only used better channel of mono recording after patches) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. (NOTE: Only light EQ used as distortion more evident when muffling/bass reduced. Faint NR artifacts audible mostly only in talking & worth the price of admission IMO). Freed 2021-12-xx.
Line-up ::: Nils Hilmer Lofgren - electric guitar, piano, vocals // Tommy Lofgren - electric guitar, vocals // Bob Gordon - electric bass, vocals // Bob Berberich - drums, vocals.
Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.
DimeTravel 592 ::: Thanks to the original taper & traders! THANKS to DIMERS elegymart, Syrinx, AlexPhoenix, TheBigA for their GRIN input in various ways. Thanks to DIMER gv0000 for his ever-helpful research assistance. ::: Corrections welcome ::: CHECK OUT this setlist. An extremely HEAVY bunch of songs. A great direction Grin was headed in, too bad it was about to come to an end. They are aware of the heaviness factor being of interest to the audience as well - dig the intro to "Keith Don't Go". A superb(!) "Like Rain" with a long Nils solo electric guitar intro that starts soft & gets very loud. The band is FULL_BORE here, a chunky, heavy sound. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees
