THE GUESS WHO
ELECTRIC LADY STUDIO
New York City 1975-01-16
FM recording from WQIV-FM
Pitch and phase corrected, and resplit on sector boundaries at Remasters Workshop, May 16, 2009.
This is an exceptionally well-engineered program, which was originally broadcast in quadrophonic sound. It's a home recording of the stereo portion of the signal (cuz who could record in quad? Not your average Joe!). The digital transfer was pretty horribly out of phase due to azimuth misalignment, but once the phase was corrected, it improved the clarity and definition of the stereo image. It also ran a bit slow, and has been sped up to A=440 here.
Now, on to the contents: This is some of the only music you will ever hear by the last edition of The Guess Who with Domenic Troiano that isn't on a studio LP. I'm pretty sure you will be fairly stunned by the level of musicianship in this show. This is the group of which Burton wrote in the liner notes to "Track Record" :
"Troiano comes in...Bang-Zoom...Flavours gets talked about by a few critics, but it's not the Guess Who anymore...we're doing things in 9/4 on stage, and then late in the show they wheel out ol' Burt to sing These Eyes and American Woman. Billy and Garry had be-bop jazz stars in their eyes, were easily blown away by Domenic's prowess...god, he can PLAYYYYYY...but it wasn't The Guess Who anymore...it was over from the day Domenic walked into the group."
All the better that this performance has been preserved. If you're a Guess Who fan, you need to hear it!
