Notes: First and only time I've seen/taped Guided By Voices. Total last minute thing, I just wanted to see a concert and tape with my (at the time) new microphones. I stood Front of Stack, stage left throughout and probably should've worn ear plugs. Phantom Planet opened up for GBV. This venue, at the time, was basically a smaller venue semi-attached to a larger theatre and it was in rough shape. No real security, PA was garbage but if you stood in front of the stacks you were almost guaranteed a solid recording. Still holds true even ~22/23 years later but even with the recent upgrades, recordings from The Magic Stick sound exactly like this one - just a tiny club which is basically a bar above a bowling alley... That night, was there with a friend of mine who wanted to just get out for a concert which from East Lansing, MI (MSU) to the venue was roughly ~70 minute drive one-way. Little did we know that the band intended to play, and I quote: "for three fucking hours" straight. I mean, not straight, they were all just killing beers throughout their set and I swear to God it made them sound better than when they were sober-ish. Some kid came up and sang, played guitar for a song that was interesting. My friend was giving me the "dude let's go" as we both had University in the AM. So, as we decided to leave, at the encore, I jumped up onto the stage right before the band walked out and grabbed the drummer's setlist. Was it the best decision ever - probably not. I looked up and saw the drummer looking from left to right for the setlist and I swear he looked at me and that was my cue to leave my position @ Front of Stack and leave; which we did. Did my best with the track splits, I guessed a bit. Included in this torrent is a setlist scan, the same one from the stage. Released/shared for the first time on DIMEADOZEN, Dec 2024.
