Capture (source 1):
Sound Professionals high SPL modified SP-CMC-9 stereo pair mics (Audio Technica AT898c Subminiature Cardioid Condenser Lavalier Microphones mounted inside hat, mics approx. 3 inches above and in front of my ears) > Sound Professionals SP-SPSB-11 battery box mic pre-amp no bass rolloff (16hz setting - off) > Edirol R-09HR line in record level approx 70 @ 24 bit 96 khz > Transcend 8GB SDHC card (24/96 wav files)
Transfer:
Transcend 8GB SDHC card (24/96 master wav files) > HP mini netbook (storage) > external USB harddrive (storage) > Wavelab 5.01b (tracking and "mastering") @ 24bit / 96khz > SoX resampler via Foobar2000 to 44.1 khz > iZotope RX Advanced MBit+ dither to 16 bit > FLAC8 + torrent via TLH > YOU!!!
Mastering:
Channels inverted (misplaced microphones) > balance adjusted > Waves Q-10 (slight EQ to more closely resemble what I remember hearing live - low bass boost, mid-high and extreme high shelf boost) > Waves S1 Shuffler (subtle stereo image widening and enhancement) > Wavelab Peak limiter @ -0.01db (see Wavelab screencap included to view the mastering settings I used)
Location:
Seats were section B row 7 seat 2, but this was too "cornery" for me
I moved to (I think) sec C row 13 in the middle of the back DFC
This was up behind soundboard area facing straight on the stage
Notes:
Heart's third-to-last show on their Canadian tour. My fourth show of my run. No more days off between shows from now on - this is the first of a three-in-a-row run home to finish the tour in a couple more days. It begins to be a bit of a blur from here, for me, folks! I'm a little confused on remembering this arena vs the arena in Kamloops the next day. Hockey in both I think. More Zamboni rooms backstage! haha.
My assigned seat was off again to the right (Craig's) side, but unlike the theatre shows where the acoustics are more forgiving and a seat off center doesn't matter that much, in this blocky old arena I could tell from the music on the PA before the show that these seats would kind of sound sucky to record from. After asking at the ticket window if I could move to the middle in the back (for a $12-something fee - no thanks!) and knowing the show was not completely sold out in my preferred area, I just moved over to a seat DFC (taper lingo - you figure it out!) up behind the soundboard area about 1/3 up the section, 12 or 13 rows up I guess.
I thought being right in the middle of the building that I'd get a pretty good stereo room ambient capture from this seat, but the room was funny. Very lop-sided, asymmetrical, creating a very strange stereo capture on this recording. Vocals came out much better to one side, and the band came out better on the other. Not the sound I was expecting to bet "on tape"! Maybe one of the mics shifted positions inside my hat? I'm not sure. It's a good recording on par with the others, but its the strangest stereo picture of the lot...
Even though I was up in the back, I didn't feel that far away from the stage. I think they set the stage more up-front and close in a more amphitheatre style than a full arena stage. Maybe the place just wasn't that big. I can say the recording sounds more up-front and punchy than my memory of the seats (which weren't that bad at all when I moved!) I guess this is another testament to these AT cards. They just seem to ignore room echoes and drunk talkers and focus right in pinpoint to the big sound coming from the PA system. Checking my second and third sources, both aren't that bad at all again, considering! The B tape could pass quite well if A didn't exist, and the C (for crap) recording with the $60 eMPty3 player Rockboxed sounds almost exactly like one of the other recordings posted earlier on the tour! So, hey, the sound must have been good at the show!
Another show they powered through quite well. No big surprises tonight. I was fucusing on the subtle little jams and licks and bits that melt into each other from night to night. They're a pretty fluid band, really! I was getting quite impressed with their playing as a whole on this night. I remember that during this show I realized that "Even It Up / Gimme Shelter" had been dropped from the set, and that I'd only seen it once! Drat!!! Also, that The Who cover was also gone in favour of 2 Zeppelin covers in a row instead. I loved their "Love, Reign o'er Me" but I can understand them swapping it out. I was really looking forward to the next couple of nights with seats pretty close to the front for both. Good times. Rock and roll!
If you have pictures from this show (or any of them) please share and post links to them, or email me copies, please. Feel free to make artworx covers for this show, but again, share with the class, m'kay? Don't bother Re-ReReMastering this show from this source. I will eventually post my un-doctored split master 24 / 96 files of this (and all the other) show(s) so if you want to play with the sound you can do it from a pure source. Speaking of pure sources, please share this show freely, but only share it in lossless file formats only. If you must, pervert the files to eMPty3 for your own use only. Please do not share lossy filesets of this show. Friends don't let friends listen lossy. Never re-encode an eMPty3 back to a .wav file!!! Share data files not audio CDR's. Rip CD's with EAC or other error correcting rippers in secure mode. This is all for your own good, so do it! Thank you.
And stop talking so much during concerts. Pay attention to the artists and shut up, or go out into the lobby to have that discussion! Don't be afraid to stand up and have fun - enjoy yourself, but don't go out of your way to ruin other people's fun. Thanks again!
Still more from this tour to come soon...
