This was a challenging show to record. I was set up probably 100 yards from the stage, and the crowd that far back was noisy and chatty. There's a couple of intermittently loud folks immediately around me, and more of them walk through the sound field at times during the show. My recorder was set up only about 3' off the ground and there were people standing in front of me for the first half hour of the show, dampening the sound. Around the start of Actual Proof, they all left and I had 20-30' of completely open space immediately in front of me, so the sound opens up quite a bit at that point. There's some occasional noise from the recording unit being jostled, and to top it all off, my levels were set a little high so there's some clipping in parts, particularly the last couple of songs (although they still sound very good to my ear). Anyhow, I think the tape accurately captures seeing Herbie at this great festival (the largest completely FREE jazz festival in the US!). I hope you enjoy!
