The Hit Heard 'Round The World - A US Army presentation DOB week of 1968-10-28 - interviews with Chris Denning, Jrgen De Mylius, Granny Goose and others hosted by Fred Robbins with groovy commercials - read notes

Here's something rare and very interesting. The US Army put out a number of different programs during the Vietnam War on LP. This is one of them. It features interviews with five now-famous deejays from London, Berlin, Mexico City, Copenhagen, and Honolulu, along with clips of what kinds of music was currently popular in their areas. Some of their choices are, well, unusual. Even more interesting are the psychedelic US Army commercials. They are played mostly by unknown bands, with the exception of the Royal Guardsmen on one of the spots. It's even possible some of the music on the deejay selections remains unreleased. All songs deejays play have either been faded out or cut entirely depending upon editing possibilities.

The format of the show included the host asking the deejay what kinds of music were popular at the moment in the location at hand. The deejay would spin a couple of songs either as a clip or in entirety, then the host would ask the deejay to pick a song with special meaning to him called "The Hit Of The Day", which would end the program. As stated, between interview clips were vintage US Army commericals.

Now on to the deejays. I've indicated links when I had them. Please fill in more details if you have them! Also many thanks to the folks from Denmark and Germany who responded to my inquiries. I didn't have your Dime handles or I would have thanked you personally. I couldn't have gone this far without you!

Disgraced child molester and male prostitute Chris Denning is first up from London. This interview is prior to his first arrest in 1974. Apparently he still has problems, for as of August of this last year he was convicted again and is currently back in jail. A limited biography of his life may be found here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Denning

Next is Hans-Dieter Frankenberg from (West) Berlin. He broadcasted over Sender Freies Berlin, or SFB as it was known at the time and his program was called S-F-Beat. As of this writing there seems to be some confusion as to whether he also used the name Peter Frankenfeld. I have almost no other information. Please comment if you have it. The Army commercial provided is from the Royal Guardians!

We continue to Mexico City and blind amazing American deejay and author Larry P. Johnson. Here's a copy of the Amazon blurb for his book "Mexico By Touch". Caps are from the original:

AT AGE 18 HE TRAVELED ALONE TO MEXICO CITY. BECAME THE TOP DEEJAY FOR THE #1 TOP 40 RADIO STATION IN MEXICO . DROVE A CAR ON A MAIN THOROUGHFARE IN THE MEXICAN CAPITAL . COMPETED AGAINST STEVIE WONDER IN A FOOT RACE AT 3 AM . BROADCAST THE 1969 APOLLO 11 LUNAR LANDING. BECAME THE FIRST BLIND NEWSCASTER ON MEXICAN TELEVISION.

Next stop is Copenhagen and nationally famous and still active deejay Jrgen De Mylius. Mr. De Mylius is nationally known for being the first to bring artists like Elvis Presley onto Danish airwaves. A biography of him is available here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%B8rgen_de_Mylius

and his personal website is here. It's in Danish but you can translate it:

Our last stop is to Honolulu and deejay Granny Goose. George Groves broadcast on KGMB in Honolulu. He doesn't seem to remember where the name came from anymore. From a recent ebay auction:

Granny Goose has been a familiar name and character to Hawaii residents for almost half a century. Since 1958, Granny Goose, aka George Groves, has done everything from disc jockeying to filling in as host of a children's program to hosting movies to doing commercial voice-overs. Granny Goose is now famous for doing infomercials on the big island. And has several gigs including KGMB TV. In the 70s he had his own show on KGMB Radio playing the top hits of the day.

Original segment length was ten minutes including commercials.
