1969-xx-xx Craigcefnparc, South Wales, UK Ambulance Hut Studio Demo (M2or3-ST)
01. Dica
02. Function
03. Thinking About It
04. Takeover
05. First Song Rock n' Roll (Romains)
Total Time ::: 24:55
::: Quite fine but it ain't a sonic wonder. Check samples for ear upload viability or to flick yr switch.
::: Warts: some instrument imbalance from mike placement & some distortion at times from the same issue. Bass a bit loud in #1. Tad of warble towards the end.
::: Tape actually labeled 1968 or 1969.
::: #2 labeled "Funtions" on my copy, but vocal intro says "Function". #3 introduced as "I'm Pissed" but presumably that's tongue-in-cheek (or literal!). #5 - The Man song is "Romain", so maybe "Romains" is a play on that, or a misspelling.
::: While the tape was labeled "studio" it sounds more like a rehearsal space recording with a couple of friends in attendance.
::: Little info online about this band - Swansea band '69-71, well-connected, toured the UK & mentions the obvious Man connections.
::: Craigcefnparc (aka Craig Cefn Parc, "park ridge rock" in English) is a village near the town of Clydach, south Wales, in the Mawr ward of Swansea.
Recording Information ::: unknown mono recording equipment -> master tape -> 1 or 2 analog generations -> 2nd or 3rd generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B on.
Playback 2015-04-xx ::: 2nd or 3rd generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi 680ZX cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth adjusted for individual tape, heads cleaned & demagnetized -> Sony Linear PCM Recorder PCM-M10 (LPCM 44.10kHz/16bit WAV files) -> computer -> Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset, channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, further pitch (speed) fixes if necessary with single pass per segment after frequency analysis & with pitchpipe verification, NO equalisation] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. First uploaded week of 2015-04-25.
Line-up (personnel as noted on demo tape) ::: Spiv Morris - vocals // Oliver Clement - electric guitar // John Flashman - electric guitar // Phil Govier - electric bass, vocals // Ray Thomas - drums. (Spiv or someone is playing marimbas).
Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.
DimeTravel 115 ::: Thanks to the original taper & traders! ::: Corrections welcome ::: One of the only mentions of the band online says the line-up was Spiv Morris - vocals, Tweke Lewis - guitar, Phil Govier - bass & vocals, Ray Thomas - drums. Tweke, of course, is our old friend from the most excellent Wild Turkey. Unfortunately, Tweke ain't playing in this line-up - it'd be fun to hear how he meshed with these guys. Maybe one of you Man freaks out there (and I know there are a LOT of them...) will be happy to give us some background & info on the band. Sure sounds like they must have been a REAL blast to see live. I really think this is most excellent. It's funny 'cause one moment you think you're listening to something a bit simplistic & the next moment it's off & running fullbore, with excellent instrumentation & jamming. The vocals work quite well & the harmonies are pretty fascinating. Some nice work on the drumkit. See what you think. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yers truly, Knees
Do whatever you want with it except sell it, 'cause that ain't cool!
