-- Edirol R-1: SBD master, MWM 0247 --
ONE OF THE BEST KEPT AUSTRALIAN SECRETS...see them LIVE NOW on their German tour !
AWESOME SOUNDING "dbtr" production w/ samples & covers & MORE !

WHAT ??

WHO ??

Their own introduction is simply awesome & DAMN COOL:

"We are 2 chicks who play music and have fun...thats pretty much it.
Our names are Julz Parker and Leesa Gentz.
For all the boring stuff go to our website !"

WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT THEM:

"Julz must be the country's top female player."
- Phil Emmanuel (in Australian Guitar Magazine)

"(Leesa) spectacular, like Robert Plant in female trousers!"
- Pierpaolo Adda, Guitar Ranch Italy

OR:

Hussy Hicks haben während der letzten Jahre für ihre eigens kreierte Marke "Funky-Feel-Good-
and Folkmusic" in der ganzen Welt geworben.

Was not able to find this miraculous and beautiful,
but sadly extreme underrated band in the DIME-bot.

=======================================

AND FINALLY what fellow DIMEr "dbtr" once wrote - and therefore he was honored with the golden
"lonetaper truffle pig award (offside the usual mainstream music)" for truly outstanding personality:

Hey, lion tribe.

Here's something I like to introduce to you. 2 young girls from Australia, The HUSSY HICKS.
Maybe you never heard of them, but I like them that much, that I don't hesistate to introduce them to you.

If the description "wandering gypsy minstrels" fits to anybody, it fits to the HUSSY HICKS 100%.
Beside the Antarctica there isn't any continent on this world, where they haven't played.
From China to Texas, from Scandinavia to Araby, from Portugal to Poland, there isn't a place
the HUSSY's haven't enjoyed their audiences.

I've met the girls for the first time in June 2008. It was the weekend of the biggest gay/lesbian/
queer-festival in Berlin which took place in the Motzstrasse. Motzstrasse 9 is also the adress of
my second living-room, the famous "Berlin-Guitars".
This was their first gig there. As far as I remember they came directly from Sicily in an old former
UK-postal service van. That van was also used - when neccesary - as their campmobile during the (couple
of weeks long) European tour.

My friend Leonard, who runs the "Berlin-Guitars" couldn't find a non high-priced hotel-room for the
girls, because of the mass of gay-party-tourists that came for the weekend. So it looked like they
have to stay in the little red van. Leonard asked me, if I could take care of Julz and Leesa.
It isn't very hard to become befriended with these girls, they are so friendly, open minded, positive.
So I offered them a place in my house - as an exchange for playing me "TEXAS" and "UGLY" - and they agreed.

The plan was to stay for the night and leave Berlin the next day.
But they liked it that much here that they stayed for a whole week. OK, a bathtub, a hairdryer, lot
of shopping places just around the corner, free internet, dozens of bars, salmon & champagne, a washing
machine probably aren't things a 21st century girl can resist.

We really had plenty of fun, lots to laugh during that time and there was a grain of sadness when they
left towards Great Britain.

But then some kind of chaos broke out:

Out fellow DIME-friend Gudi phoned me up, shortly after the girls left.
She was at a concert of the HUSSY's some time before and bought one of their (then new) CD "Life Plays Out".
Gudi tried to play this CD on her computer, but there was NO music on it! Instead the PC-game "Road Fighter"
popped up.
We then found out that the CD-plant printed on a good deal of a PC game the label of the HUSSY CD.
I phoned them up in London and they worked a whole day to check every single CD.

They then sent me a box of tested CDs and I worked a bit to get in contact with the venues they had
played in Germany and made the aware of the problem and offered to exchange the faulty discs.

But enough of the little episodes beside the music, here's

1.>> my recording from the Berlin-Guitars, enjoy and listen especially to "UGLY", so you
get the idea what can happen to one if you don't treat them girls right :-)

/if you wonder who the third member "Boris" is, this is the
"guy" in the band, the one who get kicked & beaten :-)

2.>> something ABOUT the music:

In a world where everything is reliant on a slick sales pitch or novelty marketing ploy Hussy Hicks are
a genuine breath of fresh air. This is a band that exists solely for their love of music, and not only
do they love it, but they're pretty damn good at too.
In a few short years Julz Parker and Leesa Gentz have racked up a remarkable list of festivals, venues
and dedicated fans from around the globe, and they've done it all with a couple of instruments and a
passionate desire to share their songs with the world.

The Australian girl's have become well renowned for their live performances which have been described
as spontaneous, explosive and emotive; Julz Parker is regarded as one of her country's finest guitarists
and has traded finger-style, flamenco, gypsy and Arabic licks with everyone from street performers to
Phil and Tommy Emmanuel, John Jorgenson, Lulo Reinhardt and Joe Robinson. Leesa Gentz is most recognised
for her soaring vocals and joyful, endearing stage presence and she has been steadily earning respect as
one of the most captivating vocalists in her field.

Conforming to a genre is not the girls strongpoint, however their musical approach has seen them welcomed
into the Roots, Folk, Blues, Country and World music circuits, and with a broad range of influences they
are rapidly gathering the attention of a wide spectrum of music lovers.

The Hussy Hicks have spent the past years living and playing their brand of funky feel-good folk music all
over the globe. The girls, Julz Parker and Leesa Gentz, met in late 2004 and found a musical chemistry that
has taken them on a roller coaster journey - performing on every continent, from the intimate coffeehouse
circuit of the USA to major festivals including Glastonbury, UK; The Plateau Festival, NJ America and the
Soave International Guitar Festival in Italy.

Hussy Hicks music is flavoured by a unique mix of influences and the girls present their songs in a very
tongue in cheek yet beautifully musical way, each supporting the other in their distinctively different
styles. With outstanding vocal harmonies their acoustic sound is enhanced by an exotic selection of musical
gems collected on their travels (percussion/mandolin/frog/Turkish finger cymbals/Chinese gongs etc).

Julz's eclectic approach to the acoustic guitar, rooted in the Emmanuel-esque tradition then inspired by
Spanish streets, European gypsies and Arabic intricacies has been celebrated by guitar enthusiasts in all
corners of the globe.

Leesa, although the best frog player in all the land, is most recognised for her soaring vocals and her
ability to express her deepest emotions in every song. Together the girls have found a beautiful balance
between raw emotion and an astonishing level of musicality.

There are dozens of words that can describe the music of the Hussy Hicks – passionate, spontaneous, exuberant,
emotive, intricate, explosive and fun spring to mind – but there is nothing that can adequately describe
the feeling that swells in the heart of their audience during a live performance.

It's that inexplicable magic that has swept these two girls from the small town pub where they first met
on a journey that has spread their unique acoustic music across the globe and seen them perform on some
of the most prestigious venue and festival stages across Europe, China, America, the Middle East and their
home country of Australia.

Julz Parker's eclectic approach to the acoustic guitar, initially inspired by her dad's extensive blues
record collection, is rooted in the Emmanuel-esque tradition then inspired by Spanish streets, European
gypsies and Arabic intricacies and has been celebrated by guitar enthusiasts all around the world.
Leesa Gentz is most recognised for her soaring vocals, endearing stage presence and her ability to express
her deepest emotions in every song.

Their set touches upon funk-gypsy through folk/country to high energy blues/roots and with their harmonies
and intense rhythms they pump out a heck of a lot of sound for two small girls.

Hussy Hicks debut album was released in 2008 under the direction of producer Bill Chambers. The girls are
currently recording their follow up studio album due for release February 2010 and they have recently
released their live DVD recorded at The Soundlounge, Gold Coast in January 2009.

3.>> MORE CRITICS:

"HUSSY HICKS has a sound all of its own. The songs on this album are at the same time simple yet endlessly interesting and optimistic yet heartbreakingly honest and raw. It is an album written and sung from
the heart, and the music has a real capacity to connect with something universal in each of us."
– Susan Jarvis, Capital News

"...the Australian girls reminded me and the public what real world music is all about: sweat, beat, tapping
feet, feel, passions of smart players and real human beings! You do not need an introduction to know who they
are, or to know if they are on MTV or in the top hits list. Just the joy of good music in a live concert..."
– Manne.com, Italy

"Two hussies, one guitar. There's no room for religious politics in the street press so we won't cry divine intervention, but I'll just say it’s a happy coincidence when different pieces of a musical outfit align in
one place this well. This folk/acoustic debut is one such coming-together of influences. With the vocals and
lyrics of Leesa Gentz and the guitar work of Julz Parker there's a strange diversity in the sound thanks to
the nature of equal collaboration – most tracks either flourish vocally or instrumentally. There are definite
moments of musical and lyric gorgeousness, occasionally at the same time. It's a lot Missy Higgins, a smattering
of Tegan & Sara and a wee bit knee-slapping country. Highlights are the understated, vocal-focussed This Time
and the oldschool country charm of You Are. The meld of drawn-out, chirpy guitar twang and playful, overly
metaphoric lyrics could be too sanguine to handle, except that it's balanced by downright cynical and sweetly em"
— Anna Angel, Rave Magazine

Perth Blues Club 13th April, 2010 gig review: "HUSSY HICKS, the current darlings of the Festival circuit,
were up next and their energy-charged set had everyone in the audience mesmerised. You won't find a finer
female lead guitarist than Julz Parker, who switched from acoustic to electric with ease. As for the voice
of Leesa Gentz, it soars and screams yet can be as gentle as a feather tickling your back. The two girls
intertwine their vocals delightfully in exquisite harmonies through a broad selection of ballads and more
uptempo rootsier-sounding songs. One to entertain the crowd was "Drummer Boy", which told tales about past
loves in a comedic double entendre so familiar to the Blues genre. More songs from the album, "A Million
Different Truths", had the crowd bopping along, caught up in their musical magic. "Don’t Talk To Me" posed
questions, yet their thoughtful lyrics tended to provide answers."
— Derek Cromb, Play The Blues Radio

"If you thought a combination of The Dixie Chicks and Missy Higgins would suck, you’d be damn wrong.
The new Hussy Hicks not only literally sounds like a combination of the two, their new record A Million
Different Truths is a swirling blend of dreamy country twang and soulful blues influences. You really
cannot listen to this record and not feel totally spurred to go out and rustle up some cattle or sit
around a campfire listening to the cicadas. Lonely inflicts the sense of just that: being alone.
Beautiful vocals accompanied by a subtle guitar really make this the highlight track for us.
On the other hand, the single Millisecond sounds like something you'd hear out of a coming-of-age
chick flick; it's upbeat and somehow joyfully liberating. Overall, this honest and charming record
is a real pleasure to listen to."
— Scott Templeton, Esperanto Magazine

"Hussy Hicks has a sound all of its own. The songs on this album are at the same time simple yet endlessly interesting and optimistic yet heartbreakingly honest and raw. It is an album written and sung from the
heart, and the music has a real capacity to connect with something universal in each of us."
– Susan Jarvis, Capital News

"...what real world music is all about: sweat, beat, tapping feet, feel, passion...
the joy of good music in a live concert."

the HUSSY HICKS (the name of the band)

Berlin Guitars (the venue)
Berlin (the city)
Germany (the country)

June 21, 2008 (the date)

Berlin is the capital city of Germany, and is one of the sixteen states of Germany.
It has a population of 3.4 million people, and is Germany's largest city. It is the second
most populous city proper and the eighth most populous urban area in the European Union.
Located in northeastern Germany, it is the center of the Berlin-Brandenburg Metropolitan
Area, comprising 5 million people from over 190 nations. Geographically embedded in the
European Plains, Berlin is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. Around one third
of the city's territory is composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers and lakes.
First documented in the 13th century, Berlin was successively the capital of the Kingdom
of Prussia (1701–1918), the German Empire (1871–1918), the Weimar Republic (1919–1933)
and the Third Reich (1933–1945). Berlin in the 1920s was the third largest municipality
in the world. After World War II, the city was divided; East Berlin became the capital
of East Germany while West Berlin became a de facto West German exclave, surrounded by
the Berlin Wall (1961–1989). Following German reunification in 1990, the city regained
its status as the capital of all Germany hosting 147 foreign embassies - and is today a
a world city of culture, politics, media, and science.

PLEASE NOTE: DON'T ASK ABOUT MORE SPECIFIC DETAILS IN THIS SECTION HERE !
The taper and mixing engineer dbtr cannot remember the brand of cables he
had used during this tour - definitely them expensive ones with 24 carat
fully golden connectors and thick twisted pure silver wires - and he even
won't remember exactly all his particular handholds in the final mix here.

My dear buddy hanwaker usually always writes about "his" uploads
of other people's recordings: "Don't ask - I'm just the messenger !"

SO THERE'S NOTHING MORE TO ADD - TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT...

OUR DEAR FRIEND ALEXANDER NAILED THIS SHOW HERE...

-> so NO additional EQ'ing was used here, and none of those
compressors, Sonic Maximizers or other psychoacoustic processors.

it sounds completely the way it was distinguishable that night in this venue...IF NOT WAY BETTER !!

original "dbtr" notes:

a very big "THANK YOU" to Julz and Leesa for:
- the allowance to tape the show
- playing me "Texas" and "Ugly"
and for some splendid days.

also a big "THANK YOU" to my friend Leonard who runs this place for bringing all these wonderful artists.

this is a SBD recording, so you won´t hear that much from the audience...

Fades in/out only at begin/end of the show, seamless split between the 2 CDs.
Some minutes of tuning, audience noise during the intermission and the encore
breaks are cut out - so truly NO MUSIC was harmed or lost.
