boombox's notes november 2014:

To say this was my most looked-forward to show for years would be an understatement! I first
discovered Huw at a folk club in the mid-80s and followed him and partner-in-crime Tony Williams
(no relation!) all over the place for the next 15 years until they called it a day not long after
they celebrated their 21st Anniversary tour. During that time, his songs were covered by Fairport
Convention and Simon Nicol eg 'Summer before The War', 'Rosemary's Sister', 'Geordie Will Dance
the Jig Tonight' aka 'Ginnie' and 'Right Side Of The Footplate' aka 'Travelling By Steam'. After a
10 year break, during which Huw did other things ranging from radio presenting to nurturing and
managing his daughter's band, Calan, and even teaching clog dancing in schools, Huw returned to
the stage with Fairport alumni Maartin Allcock and has been gigging sporadically. This however, it
turns out, was his first ever solo gig! I did record all the opening floor spots, but have only
included the last one here, as he was rather good.

Recording came out pretty well, despite my being sat behind just about the only talkers in the
audience - whatever happened to old school folk club etiquette?? Still, you only hear them
occasionally. However, main wart is that I realised at the setbreak that I hadn't blanked my
memory card beforehand (schoolboy error!). Switching from 24/96 to 16/44 gave me just over 50
minutes for Set 2 and of course the inevitable happened - Huw was in a chatty mood - so
'Rosemary's Sister' cuts out a minute or so before the end. Still it is what it is and if it turns
someone new on to Huw's wonderful songwriting, then I've achieved something.

As always, my masters are available for any remasters anyone wants to do.
