I recently located this tape, which refused to play. Transferring the reels to
a different shell did not help. A local lab was unable to get it to work, saying
the tape was sticking and it likely needed to be baked. I sent it to an out-of-state
lab, who also could not get it to work. They mailed it back, where it sat in my
mailbox on a hot day for several hours. I gave it one last try, and apparently
the mailbox baking did the trick. I was able to complete the transfer. The exact origins
of the tape are unknown, but the festival host told me recently that she did not hire
anyone to record or sell tapes of the event, so it is not commercially released.
The IU archive did not have this on file. It's a superb performance, featuring
musicians who would go on to play with Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, and many others.
