Jazz Workshop, Boston, Mass. U.S.A.
April 10, 1976
source: 1st generation audience tape (reel copy of master cassette)
performance quality: A
Recording quality: B+ About as good as I've heard for an audience
recording of anybody at the Jazz Workshop. unknown deck and mikes (good ones)
comments: This is close to a full set from
one of I believe 8 they played on this run
(2 each night, 4 night stand) at the Jazz Workshop.
This was during my favorite time for this group.
The songs were all very stretched out with adventurous
playing. I think this one is missing the 1st song, which
for this band means about the 1st 20 min. But what is here
is about 73 min. of a very nice audience recording in a very famous
and divey-pit club (The Jazz Workshop made the Rat look like a
luxury hotel ballroom!) that has hosted the likes of Miles Davis,
McCoy Tyner, Joe Farrell, Chick Corea & RTF and far more artists
who deserved far better acoustics to play in than this thing, but
this is Boston, wounded, old and treacherous city that for a long time
had endless great jazz shows playing in dumpy clubs. This music is from
the way-out-there period of Jack and John. I think this is the second set,
because if it was the first one there would be a second one too. The
person who taped this vanished somewhere, but I know he loves John Abercrombie
of almost any kind. Alot of people around Boston do. He's another
Berklee College alum, and always gets a warm response here. There are recordings
of both full April 11th sets, also 1st generations. That's coming, eventually.
Be patient, I'm peddling as fast as I can with the ups after a technical delay
of 14 months.
Do not sell this recording.
Trade freely and losslessly.
