NEW YEAR'S EVE 1967 - 1968 final jam set with members of Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and The Holding Company and Quicksilver Messenger Service.

Winterland Arena
San Francisco, California, USA

This set seems to be a rarity - much less circulated than the Airplane, Big Brother or QMS sets from this show.

It's a decent sounding audience recording from my 2nd gen. reel. I think that this is the best copy that you will find of this, though I would love to be proven wrong.

I got this recording from David Cooks (early tape archivist for John Cipollina), who attended the show and noted the following details during the performance. It's easy to hear the guitars and lead vocalists as listed, but the background vocals are not as easy to differentiate. So don't expect Janis or Grace to be very obvious in the mix. The jams are fairly tight despite being rather extended.

1 [00:24] excerpt of announcer at New Year's Eve midnight

2 [05:50] Baby What You Want Me To Do? (featuring John Cipollina and Jorma Kaukonen guitar with Dino Valenti and Gary Duncan vocals

3 [02:59] instrumental led off by Jorma Kaukonen with John Cipollina and Gary Duncan also on guitar >

4 [14:26] a bit of space music > jam featuring Gary Duncan and James Gurley guitars >

5 [04:03] Ride This Train (featuring all the guitarists and lead vocals by Marty Balin with Dino Valenti, Grace Slick and Janis Joplin on backing vocals) >

6 [14:29] jam with Dino Valenti lead vocals and with Marty Balin, Grace Slick and Janis Joplin on backing vocals [cut]

Notes

David Cooks passed away a few years back in Grants Pass, Oregon. David certainly had a somewhat controversial career in archival circles (to put it politely) but also was a true character.
