comments:
more from big bands in small places. This was not recorded on the same deck that managed to warblize my 82 recording of
this group. (that incident got it a benching and retirement from recording) It's not as close up as that was and the 1st half
hour of set one has levels recorded too low in the master tape, so there is some tape noise in that part. After that it sounds
pretty good (and no warbling problems in this recording). Both David Torn and Bill Frisell (one or the other, not together)
played with Garbarek in 1984 concerts (according to etree which listed 4 shows from 84, of course not this one). I was not very
close up and never got to see David Torn live, but I'm pretty sure this show has Bill Frisell in it. Fortunately that shouldn't get
this canned because the concert was billed as "Jan Garbarek featuring Eberhard Weber". maybe they said featuring Weber but this
group mainly features Garbarek. He is the principle song writer and band leader in both this and the 82 concert from same place.
the band is not introduced in either show. Each show has a tape flip cut in it, but is close to complete. This will fit on 2 80 min. CD's
if you put track 4 along with the second show. Both track 4 and 8 are encores. I think they are both the same song title.
My first transfer of this came out well, but was never posted. I did another transfer for the 1st posting mainly to provide a CD-free
lineage. Although I was rather far back, not far from some speakers so I don't get much stage sound, but most of it comes through the PA
speakers. If this was a Deep Purple concert it would probably sound pretty lousy, but for this kind of music, not bad at all. there is some
overemphasis in the lower midrange frequency in here, especially the bass drum, but since it's not played very loudly it doesn't ruin it.
the mikes used were probably pretty crummy ones. I thought the 82 concert in this same place was the best Garbarek I've ever heard. This wasn't as
hot, but still a very good performance, likely to be enjoyed by Garbarek's many fans. There is some talking in parts of it, but not alot and not loud.
People who see jazz shows in Cambridge are expected to not talk loudly (if at all) when live music is playing, especially quiet music. Most
willingly comply to that. There is some quiet music in here too, and not alot is loud, less so than the 82 show which was very high energy
(and partly also offspeed, which this one should not be.)
