Comments:
Nice audience recording from The Jayhawks' headlining appearance at Taste of Chicago last weekend. Apparently there were very few people in attendance -- very unusual for the headliner slot on the Saturday of a holiday weekend -- which, though bad for the city of Chicago and Taste vendors, was very good for the taper. There is very little audience interference on the recording, and the overall sound is pretty good -- the bass starts out too heavy in the mix but is quickly corrected within the first couple of songs.
The setlist from their first summer 2011 date is representative of the band's brief run of shows in the winter of 2011 -- almost exclusively pulled from "Tomorrow The Green Grass" and "Hollywood Town Hall," with a couple of new tracks from the upcoming "Mockingbird Time" album ("She Walks In So Many Ways" and "Black Eyed Susan") thrown in. The set closes with a cover of Victoria Williams' "Lights," which I have to admit is growing on me. (I didn't care for it when I saw them play it in January, and though I think the end stretches out too long, I'm beginning to think this song was a good choice.)
Many thanks to Tucker for sharing this one with me; I haven't yet gotten over the shock from when he silently handed me the discs when I sat down next to him at the Milwaukee show, with no idea who I was.
My source of the Milwaukee show coming to DIME soon. Mp3 samples are included in the comments.
