This torrent is incompatible with the CD-Audio standard. The sound is in 24-bit stereo sampled at 96 kHz. Feel free to post a downsample - I’m not going to at least until I’ve got all my tapes done.

Notes, rambles, etc.:

If you have a recording labeled “1988-04-02 The Ritz, New York City” or something close, it’s neither The Ritz nor April 2nd, 1988. Someone reading this is thinking ‘I could have told you that.’

The taper, Shawn, posted in a Holdsworth group that he was looking for someone to digitize it. After his tape arrived I realized I have a soundboard labeled “1988-04-02 The Ritz, New York City USA”. I thought perhaps the day/month was reversed, ‘cause it’s hard to believe the tour would be back at the same venue two months later. I did a quick overlay of a track and these aren’t the same show. Googled around and discovered that the soundboard is actually the next night, 1988 02 05 The Chance, Poughkeepsie, NY. There are several audio clips from that show out on youtube with the wrong info.

The first song is a mystery to me. I have to wonder if they wrote it for this tour. The ‘head’ and underlying changes aren’t an improv; I have a few shows from the tour and it’s the same every night. I’m also at a loss to place track 10. It’s not ‘F Blues’ - there’s an announced version of that in addition to this tune on the Boston recording. That the melody (starting about 70 seconds in) is heavily carried by the synth makes me think it might be a Bernard Wright composition, but I’m not familiar with his work. Any help would be welcome.

I did a minimal cleanup: increased the volume, brought the speed up to pitch (Pud Wud is not in A♭). Tape flip is in the middle of track 6; I reduced the gap.

Shawn & co are kind of talkative. Mostly between songs, but not always. Someone makes recommendations for moving the recorder at least a couple times, which is done occasionally, causing some noticeable phase changes. So it goes.

Discovered the pic of the laminate while looking for info; decided to include it.

Peace,
