Schoeps MK4V stage front.

This was a last minute gig that came together while JPB was
stateside for a brief visit. Originally billed as solo he
got together with locals for a jam. One time show, one time
line up. All improv.

This is as good as I've ever heard him, but admittedly I
haven't really heard that much. Maybe it's the "you should
be there" factor but it still seems great on playback. I
definitely got what he was after here. JPB : "I don't know
what we call this group... but it's a group... Whatever...
I just felt it... Period."

The show is in some ways two sides of the coin. The first
set is pretty experimental and free and kind of ambient.
The second set is on fire.

RECORDING NOTES :

This was recorded on the front edge of the stage. That was
the placement for optimal sound in this basement club with
lots of hard surfaces and a low ceiling, with the main aisle
immediately behind the front tables (and therefore in front
of almost all of the crowd that wasn't way off to the sides of
the stage). Not an easy place to record but I had free reign
(for which I thank Jean Paul and all involved).

The left mic was about 6 inches off a PA speaker through which
all the samples (and the vocals) were run. The guitar and bass
were not running through the PA. The right mic was about three
feet off the amps and picking those (and any stage sound) up
clearly. There were no monitors. The result is a really nice
wide stereo spread that reproduces exactly what you would have
heard at the edge of the stage. It was pretty loud but very
clear. The board was unmanned. I thought the samples were a
bit too loud in the mix at points, especially on the first set,
but the wide spread and great separation allows you to dial your
own mix. I balanced it for this presentation as I would have
liked it. The channels are not equal in volume. I don't think
they should be on this. Blending the channels to mono to even
them up would destroy the immediacy and ambiance which are really
special on this one.

As Jean Paul said: "Those are Schoeps! You're gettin' the shit."

Enjoy!
