Jeff Beck
The Capitol Theatre
Port Chester, NY
July 19, 2016

For my tastes, this was an excellent show. Jeff's shows the past few years have trended toward mellow.

While I did not think the "Bones" women added anything substantial, the new material was harder and edgier and gave Beck a nice launching pad for his pyrotechics. It also made the two more tolerable. Other than one solo, Carmen Vandenberg was barely noticeable. Rosie Bones came on sounding and looking like a rapper. But remember, they are called rap groups, not rap bands. No "group" of that genre has a guitar player like Jeff Beck. Jeff plays in a band.

Jimmy Hall is still an awesome vocal presence and had a lot more to bring to the table. Jeff has had a parade of great drummers and Jonathan Joseph is no slouch. With three vocalists and little time for bass solos, Rhonda Smith stayed pretty much in Jeff's shadows, but still held down the bottom quite nicely.

But Jeff is still the star, and still makes sounds from a guitar unlike anyone else. He definitely enjoys this band and they play nicely together.

Track 11 "O.I.L" was played on an "oil can guitar" that was apparently a gift from Billy Gibbons. It looked like a Bo Diddly cigar box guitar on steroids. The mix of new and old tunes made from a great experience that I would recommend to anyone in the vicinity of this tour.

The only disapointment was the failure for Jeff and opener Buddy Guy to sit in with one another but this was the first show of the tour, so I guess it's understandable.

The sound quality of the recording is quite good, I think, and being up front with cardioid mics kept the crowd noise to a minimum. Sound samples are posted.
