Notes:
Jeff Bridges finally brought his band a little further north of Santa Barbara County as part of a two city tour prior to his travels to the RNC and
DNC. Santa Ynez once again got two shows (on August 21), but this was his San Luis debut as a musician. Unlike the Santa Ynez gigs, we were not
graced by the presence of his SB friends (e.g. David Crosby) and his extended family, but sister Cindy was there to show support. Backed by The
Abiders, which is a fine group of SB area musicians, JB was a charming performer and it was especially cool to hear the song he wrote with John
Goodman entitled "Thousand Year Plan." This was a solid show up until "Blue Car" when JB started messing up the lyrics. On the flip side, it made
that song nearly 8 minutes long, which made me happy since that's my favorite tune from his self-titled album. JB had a music stand in front of him
and I assumed it held the lyric sheets, but he never referred to it outside of changing the pages after each song. And the rather fitting cover of
Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Lookin' Out My Back Door" also suffers from forgetfulness of a key change and had to be restarted. Despite that, I
am very happy to have finally seen this man sing live and if I had the money, I definitely would have gone to the late show.
For info, JB broke a string on his acoustic shortly into "I Don't Know." The band's tech grabbed a back-up acoustic from backstage, but JB switched
to his Gretsch and remained with it for the entire show. Sorry about the quick fade-in on the intro by the venue's co-owner, Korie. That intro was
somewhat awkward because JB came out on stage before he had been introduced. And the ticket time for this venue means the door time rather than the
show time. Doors were scheduled to be at 5:15pm and the show started at 6:20pm. So I have listed this early show based on the ticket time of 5:15.
Now onto the audience noise. There is some clapping along, mostly with the uptempo songs--especially the CCR cover. Some of it was random (once on
a beat or even offbeat) and it might sound like pops, but it's not. The women to my left wouldn't shut up during the first two songs, but then they
got pushed further back by the crowd and are only heard in the background between songs after that. On a related note, it was funny hearing people
telling the talkers to shut up during "The Weary Kind." It eventually worked, but you can still get an idea of how people rudely talked through this
show. The guard standing at the front of the stage can be heard a few times telling people to stop doing things they weren't supposed to be doing.
And after "Blue Car," a woman started talking to me (you'll hear why). Unfortunately, when she left the area, she ended up shifting the crowd and a
wooper ended up behind my right, but the wooper is only loud during "Fallin' & Flyin'" and the very beginning of "Thousand Year Plan." A far more
annoying woman and her friend pushed their way near me during "Slow Boat," so there's talking and phasing galore for a chunk of that song. The drunk
one ended up on my right and used me to help prop herself up since she was rather out of it. She also tried to sing back-up vocals and screamed like
she was Speedy Gonzales and Pee-wee Herman (I don't know how else to describe her wails). A couple of times, she talked to her friend who was on the
other side of me, then got fed up and told her friend she was leaving (*phew*). As a result, only "Slow Boat" is ruined.
This was a sold out show and it was extremely hot in the venue, so you'll hear the fans between songs and during the quieter songs.
I amplified this but did nothing else to the recording, so be sure to turn it up.
