Total Time ::: 1:23:06

::: Mk2 VG++ clear/up-close mono AUD (many more issues fixed than in Mk1 version). Check samples to flee fast or for joy&jubilation.
::: Warts (less on Mk2!): Repaired dullspots & dropouts but surely missed a few. #01 1st min&last 30secs had master tape degradation issues (NOT digi-noise but glitches) & a few split sec tapestick/drag spots (1st 45 secs issues minimized in this Mk2 version). After #11 taper cut off deck between some songs. #13 starts 1sec late&has some clapping&cuts before end (missing ~2mins?). #21+23 some clapping in parts (#21 fixed & #23 partly fixed). Some very lite high end fluctuations thruout (esp.SideB - MUCH less in Mk2!) from tape dying & Mk1 #21-25 has worse high end fluctuations&wavering (MUCH less evident and/or fixed in Mk2). #24 end of song some dropouts/tape degradation.
::: COMPARISON CLAUSE: AFAIK, this is 1st DIME upload for this show & it's a MAJOR upgrade over only other online version I've heard.
::: CONTRAST CLAUSE: This is the BETTER sounding Mk2 MONO EQ+lite NR remaster. The Mk1 NoEQorNR STEREO remaster may be found elsewhere.
::: NOTE: Master tape dying at time of transfer&original tape deck maybe had some problems. Both issues GREATLY resolved in Mk2 MONO version.
::: 60 killer minutes of very fine quality for its vintage, then rest varies due to some high-end fluctuations (much better in Mk2 version).
::: G.P. Productions "presents Jefferson Airplane featuring Grace Slick" Weds 8pm. Tix $5+6.
::: Glenn McKay's Headlights provided visual psychedelics. Venue capacity was 8000 at concerts.
::: Couldn't locate poster but ticket scans here: www.tunabase.com/setlists/1970/19700819.html
::: Possibly some songs played that are missing on this tape (there are a few fades) but probably all of 'em.
::: Crabby Appleton & B.O.O.T. (Boot) billed as openers (NOT Hot Tuna). Crabby Appleton cancelled at last minute.
::: NOTE: While JAbase & Tunabase list Hot Tuna on the bill, this is NOT correct. Some tour locations listed Hot Tuna but NOT Tampa/AtlantaOrlando (&likely others). Dimer gv0000 researched this carefully. Hot Tuna is NOT mentioned in the Atlanta 1970-08-24 ads/handbill/newspaper review, nor in/on the Tampa 1970-08-19 tickets/review & Hot Tuna was not listed on the scheduled, advertised line-up for Orlando 1970-08-22, either.

MISC SEMI-RELATED FACTOIDS:
::: "Volunteers"LP recorded March 28-June 12 & issued Nov. '69, so 'twas a well-known masterpiece by this time.
::: "Have You Seen The Saucers"/"Mexico" 7" 45 single recorded Feb'70 & issued in May'70."
::: "Mexico"was Grace's lambast of Tricky Dick's Operation Intercept anti-dope campaign trying to stem pot flow from Mexico".
::: "Mexico"sales banned(!)in some USA states but reached #102 in Billboard charts. 5 months after release, Dick asked that no drug songs be broadcast on radio&TV.
::: RCA had little JA material to release in '70 so "The Worst of Jefferson Airplane" issued in November.
::: J.Tamarkin says"Whatever The Old Man Does Is Always Right"is correct title. Paul intros it here as"Whatever The Old Man Wants".
::: Taped, as many of this era in FLA were, by JT - his tapes roll on! (also taped JS Tampa 1974-11-06).
::: 2nd gig of Airplane's short east coast tour 15-27 August 1970 & this is the 1st of their 3 Florida gigs.
::: Only Tampa&Atlanta have surfaced from this cool tour&entire end June thru mid-Sept'70 era. Surely others exist. Please check yr boxes!
::: We need an early 1970s MI reel/cassette transfer when master was in better shape. Can YOU help?
::: Is it sinking in yet that we are working on/collecting/downloading many recordings that are more than 50/FIFTY! years old?
::: ATTENTION ~PRESS BREAK~ SIGNE TOLY ANDERSON unreleased 1970 SOLO "album"...While researching info for this upload, I found the following 2 articles. 1970-11-07 Billboard says new Marin Disc label ALREADY recorded new Signe Toly Anderson LP (Michael Kamen of NY Rock Ensemble produced). 1970-12-31 Record World says, "Her first album, which she has conceived&designed, is entitled 'Circles' with 6 original songs&others by leading contemporary writers." So, was it recorded? Seems VERY likely demos were made. Inquiring ears WANT to hear - soon! We're aging. Signe's gone, Michael's gone. Just think about who might have played on it. Dig, Baby, Dig!

Recording Information ::: unknown stereo recorder (with ALC) & microphones -> master (narrow!) stereo audience tape (probably cassette) -> 1st generation Maxell XLII-S 90 cassette, Dolby off. (THIS Mk2 MONO version only uses the better RICHT channel).
NOTE: Unless using headphones, most people won't notice the narrow stereo anyway (it is NOT a real win). Go with the Mk2 MONO version. It is a MUCH better, steadier listen.

Playback 2017-03-xx & remastering mostly in 2020 ::: 1st generation Maxell XLII-S 90 cassette on Nakamichi 680ZX cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth adjusted for individual tape, heads cleaned & demagnetized -> Sony Linear PCM Recorder PCM-M10 (LPCM 44.10kHz/16bit WAV files) -> computer -> Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset (NOT to normalize volume), channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, adaptive azimuth adjustment on stereo version, speed varied some so assorted averaged pitch (speed) fixes with single pass per segment after frequency analysis & with pitchpipe verification #01 +0.6% & #02 to ~51mins +1.2% & ~51-69 mins +.65% & ~69-74 +1.2% & ~64-end +1.5%, Mk2 has differential (matching) EQ on 2 muffled parts (1 near middle? + #23-25), & has lite NR on the entire recording] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. NOTE: Between song talk/volume still somewhat unnaturally loud due to ALC but start of song volume surges mostly fixed. This R channel MONO Mk2 version sounded pretty fine thru the main set (tho' has some slight high end fluctuations on Side B which are MUCH less noticeable in the Mk2) then quality dropped off in #23-25 from cassette (type/formulation) change during the encore break or more likely people stood up for the encore (in front of the mike) or taper changed locations but this issue mostly fixed with EQ in this Mk2 version). This Mk2 version has complete 2nd run-thru for repairs. Freed 2021-09-xx.

Line-up ::: Grace Slick (born Grace Barnett Wing) - vocals // Martyn Jerel Buchwald aka "Marty Balin" (†R.I.P. 2018†) - vocals // Paul Lorin Kantner (†R.I.P. 2016†) - electric guitar, vocals // Jorma Kaukonen - electric guitar, vocals // John William "Jack" Casady - electric bass, eyebrows // Joseph Edward "Joey" Covington (born Joseph Edward Michno) (†R.I.P. 2013†) - drums, percussion, vocals.

Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.

DimeTravel 694 ::: Thanks to the original taper & trader, many years a taping partner of mine, JT! Thanks to SIRMick for running the adaptive azimuth adjustment on the 2 channel version. Thanks to DIMER gv0000 for weighing in on opening bands & other research ::: Corrections welcome ::: A fairly majestic Airplane show with pretty tight delivery, Grace not too off the deep end & a great vocal interplay with Marty in several places. Very cool ending on "Pooneil". I REALLY dig both this Tampa show & the Atlanta show from the following week - a GREAT period of HeAvY, HiGh-fLYiN' 'Plane. FLY, listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees
