Ah, the delights of Bilston in the heart of the Black Country. Since the band were actually staying at the venue, this was a gig where my duties were to cease once I'd dropped the band off in mid-afternoon. I could therefore spend the rest of the afternoon and the gig hanging with friends, having a few drinks and with no responsibilities other than recording. Of course, the best laid plans oif mice and men... First of all my hotel was changed, from half a mile from the gig to one about 5 miles away. And whilst a re-jig of plans meant I was still able to avoid further driving once I'd checked in to the new hotel, the realisation that Cathy had left her luggage back in Southampton meant that the band's manager was faced with a 300+ mile round trip, including negotiating one of Britain's most congestion-prone pieces of motorway during rush hour. Luckily I didn't pick up too much extra to do, and was able to have a few drinks and relax. The show was graced by another performance on the supporting bill by the Pat McManus Band, a likeable bunch of blokes who come over like a heavier version of Thin Lizzy with the odd touch of rocked-up Celtic folk.
The Robin 2 bills itself as "The Midlands premier 700 capacity live concert venue" and whilst its a fairly unremarkable single storey venue, it's decently equipped and a popular place, and a pretty regular stop on JS UK tours. It's a good solid show with a fine Codeine. Despite being one of the largervenues on the tour, the soundboard mix was noticeably light on guitars, so this is another case where I upped the audience recording proportion in the mix to 35%. Since the mic was a fair way back in a fairly large hall, it might sound a little "echo-ey", but hopefully not too much.
