Chatham, a town that produced literally hundreds of wooden ships for the Royal Navy over several centuries. The Central Theatre is the second oldest venue on the tour (after the Queen's Hall in Edinburgh), being opened as the Methodist Central Hall in 1908, and it's the oldest to be used as an entertaiment venue, ever since the Methodists sold it in 1966. (one of the early shows there was the famous Hendrix/Move/Pink Floyd/Nice/Amen Corner package tour in late 1967). The good news is that it's a well-preserved venue with a great stage and auditorium. (You can see a nice shot of the auditorium at http://www.davidrumelle.com/USERIMAGES/Chatham%20Central-Stage%20view%201.JPG and a reasonable picture of the stage from the balcony at http://www.whosbadmusic.com/uploads/400x300/1883bd607648f25bfc8ee7564f24daca_400x300.jpg) (It also had probably the nicest dressing room on the tour).
The bad news is that being run by the local council, and mainly being used for theatrical purposes, the staff are slightly fussy theatrical types, rather than the music fans you find at dedicated music venues. They're big on rules and regulations and rather less keen on loud amplified music, and people taking pictures and video of it. It didn't cause me any problems, but I know a few people had problems. The other slightly surprising thing was that whilst the venue holds nearly a thousand people, they had sold tickets for both upstairs and downstairs, rather than just closing the balcony. Unfortunately this meant that my audience mic was towards the back of the upstairs, rather than right at the front. That said, the sound was remarkably good.
This was a bit of a curate's egg of a show, with a setlist rather less predictable than most on the tour - two Pink Floyd covers (note there was no "Eclipse" after "Brain Damage"), Space Oddity, Pooneil bookending the set - it was definitely an adventurous show, although mixed feelings on whether it worked.
