OldNeumanntapr Notes-
The last time I got a recording of Jerry Douglas was at the Lobero in 1999, when the Neumanns were still fairly new. Maura O’Connell was a vocalist at that show too. My friend Jack in San Diego tipped me to this show a couple of weeks before the performance, and I was lucky enough to be able to purchase a single seat in the third row. I would have preferred to be back in the 7th or 8th row but you take what you can get, especially at the last minute. The sound coming off the stage was really good, but the vocals were not as well defined as I would have liked, especially the spoken words. I still can’t make out the band member’s names. Fortunately the show was mostly instrumentals. Jerry is an awesome dobro player and is an amazing musician to watch on stage. I had to drive to this show myself, as I thought my friend Dave would go, but he was seeing another concert that same night at the Cal Poly PAC. I got home at 1 am from Santa Barbara, and listened to part of the recording in the truck on the way back. The previous night I was also third row center, to record Ottmar Liebert & Luna Negra at Tooth & Nail Winery in Paso Robles, and was up late for that one too. I still don’t think I’ve caught up on my sleep, but it was worth it. As a taper years ago at a Dead show at Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland said: “We fulfill a valuable archival purpose.” I couldn’t agree more, and that’s why I do what I do. I was pleased with the sound quality of both recordings. As usual, Dennis did a great job with his Sound Forge program, so hats off to him! The second set was over 81 minutes long, so those of you that burn to CD should probably place the first song of the second set at the end of the first disc to keep continuity and hold the recording to only two discs. On a side note, 29 years ago to the day I had recorded my 1st Shoreline Amphitheatre Grateful Dead show, and met my long-time friend ‘TaprRon’. Party on, Ron!
