JETHRO TULL
"My Ultimate ConcertÓ
1969 - 1999

THIS IS PART 1 OF A 2-PART COLLECTION
Tracks 1 - 21 (CDs 1 & 2)

THE IDEA:
If I could tell Ian what songs IÕd like the band to play live for a show.

This is indulgent, very indulgent.
No, it will NEVER happen in the real world.
It would be a 5-hour show, and that's too long even for Springsteen, but so what.
This is just for fun. Hopefully others will find it enjoyable.

THE PROBLEM:
Too many songs.
The other problem is that it has been 11 years since the last real Tull album of new material.
Sorry, but I donÕt count the Christmas Album.

A little sonic nit-picking notification:
Because the recordings have different sonic qualities (some are bassier, some are more trebly, some are echoy-er), ofttimes the transitions between songs can be a bit jarring for the second or two that it takes for your ear and mind to adjust to the change in sound quality.

THE PROCESS OF PICKING THE SET LIST:
I originally planned this to be 2 CDs,
but with both Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play clocking in at about 13 minutes each,
and with 18 more albums to cover, I had to double that to 4 CDs.
After some consideration on how best to construct a show that would adequately and interstingly showcase TullÕs 40-year performance and 20-album history, I decided to pick 1, 2 or 3 songs (that they had played live) from each album.

I went back and forth on whether to include IanÕs solo material, since The Jethro Tull band does play them live.
It was a tough decision, especially since I really like some of it a lot.
Ultimately, after much brain wracking, I decided this should be a Jethro Tull-only project.

The songs that Tull plays every night, which have been seared into my consciousness over 35 years of attending their concerts and collecting their boots, have been ommited.
Frankly, IÕm tired of hearing the old war horses, Bouree, Aqualng, and a few others, so they are not included here (after all I am telling Ian what to play at ÒmyÓ concert.)

Basically chronological, but not strictly.

THE CHOICE OF VERSIONS:
I started with ÒThere are no rules.Ó
Well that changed quickly.
I wanted to make this so IÕd listen to it more than once, ergo...
Sound quality became an important consideration.
I tended to go with SB and FM sources, which means that most of this comes from Òwell-knownÓ and ÒfamiliarÓ recordings.
If the song was rare or if it was a particularly rockinÕ version, IÕd use a lesser sounding recording.

I relied heavily on what I consider to be the "recording of the year", or maybe even the decade:
PRRP 054 - soundboard from Tull live in Manchester, UK, February 5, 1977.
It gives me hope that an SB from Brick or Passion Play exists.
(then again, maybe a copy of London After Midnight will emerge from some unknown archive too...)

OTHER THOUGHTS
I had thought about adding applause between songs in an attempt to create a single concert recording. I nixed that idea because the sound of the recordings varies, as does any applause within that recording. And, all the work of adding and mixing applause would probably not
add anything to the listening experience.
So each song either ends in silence or, more usually, ends with a fade out during applause.
Hope that works for you.

=================================================

THE LINEAGE:
As you would expect the lineage for the songs varies, as does the sound quality.
These are all lossless as I got them from Dime, cassette trades, vinyl boots, and CD trades.
No remastering was done by me.
Most were taken directly from FLAC files, as that is how I archive things now.
Most have been edited slightly, usually just the beginning and/or end, i.e., just talk, appaluse, noise or silence.

*** IMPORTANT***
Add the following to the lineages of all the songs, unless they are marked with #:

Raw transfers.
Excluding volume standardization and very slight editing, what you have is what I have.
No EQ or "enhancement" or "improvement" has been done to alter the sound of any of these recordings.

---------------------------------------------------------------
THE SOUND:
Varies a lot.
No one sample would be adequate.
If this interests you remember that I tried to use good quality sources so that this might become part of your regular listening library.

---------------------------------------------------------------

TO FELLOW DIMERS:
I offer what I have, with ALL the information known to me.
If you've got a better version, seed it.
If you have more accurate information, please add it in a comment.
If anyone would like to attempt a remastering job, go right ahead.

Let's try and keep it positive and make DIME as good an experience for all as possible.

cheers,
Lake Ogleton
