JETHRO TULL
April 2, 1971
Chicago, IL
Civic Opera House

Hey gang,
I just stumbled on this tape in my stack of Tull
and thought some might be interested in this one.
This is the first time I have digitized this.
It may be rare, it may not be.
Regardless, I've never seen it on DIME.
Heck, there are currently no 1971 Tull shows here.

This MAY BE the live debut of "Hymn 43" (see below),
a song they didn't play in concert for very long.

This show has been made into a boot called "It's Only Me"
I've never heard that boot so don't know if it
sounds better or worse than this version.
I got this tape in trade about 20 years ago.

A THOUGHT:
The album Aqualung had not been released in the USA at the time of this concert.
It was released on May 3.
Think of this.
The band played 6 songs (60 minutes) from their as-yet-unreleased LP,
music the audience didn't know.
They played only 2 songs (less than 20 minutes) of familiar material.
Who does that these days? nobody.
Would contemporary audiences tolerate that? Not likely.

And they would do it again 2 years later with A Passion Play

--------------------------
THE BAND
Ian Anderson - vocal, flute, guitar
Martin Barre - guitar
Jeffrey Hammond - bass (joined the band in January)
Clive Bunker - drums (he would depart Tull in a month)
John Evan - keyboards

--------------------------
THE SONGS:

01 intro 2.24
02 Nothing is Easy 6.04
03 intro 1.08
04 Aqualung 6.27
05 intro 0.36
06 Hymn 43 3.47
07 intro 1.18
08 My God with flute solo11.49
09 intro 1.32
10 Cross-Eyed Mary with drum solo (spliced due to tape flip) 15.55
11 With You There To Help Me / By Kind Permission Of 11.26

TOTAL TIME 84.14

from THE MINISTRY OF INFORMATION at
http://www.ministry-of-information.co.uk/setlist/71.htm :
"Considering other setlists from this period, 'Hymn 43' was unexpected Ð if it was played, this was the world premiere, over a month before it appeared again. However, an audience member confirms that it wasn't merely spliced into the recording by a bootlegger."

--------------------------
THE SOUND:
Taped from the audience
Typical lousy 1971 sound
many generations removed from the master

--------------------------
THE LINEAGE:

audience > ??? > to me on cassette > Nakamichi BX-2 with azimuth adjustment done > digitize via Audacity > FLAC 8 via xAct

A raw transfer.
No noise reduction or eq was applied.
Tape player (Nakamichi BX-2) azimuth adjustment was done.
