Unknown taper. CD-Rs remastered by tombstone April 1&2, 2016
Lineage: AUD recording on CD-R. I probably received a copy of this show about 14
years ago. So, CD-R>Rip to my computer via MediaMonkey FLAC Level 6>renamed and
realigned tracks in Audacity>you.
I have a handful of spring 1980 shows in my possession that don't seem to routinely
circulate. I think shows should be shared and enjoyed, not hoarded. I've been on a Tull
kick lately so I went through my CDs and realized I had several of these shows from the
end of the Stormwatch tour. I love that tour. Plus, in my opinion, that was the end of
the most interesting and powerful of line-ups in Tull history. I was afraid my copies may
start exhibiting the signs of wear (i.e. pockmarks that aging CD-Rs seem to get) that
might damage the information contained within. I never backed these up so this was a
good opportunity to start.
This show is unique in that the taper was present for the soundcheck. I thought that was
pretty cool. There are several points where he stops and starts the tape during this
segment but it's not instrusive. Tull doesn't actually run through any songs in their entirety
anyway. But it's interesting to hear them testing the sound and it's relationship to the
venue. The venue happens to provide a somewhat boomy atmosphere, unfortunately, but
the sound of the show isn't really bad at all. During the soundcheck, they run through segments
of songs like Peggy's Pub, King Henry's Madrigal and Wond'ring Aloud (which they do not play
during the show) and several classically inspired guitar and keyboard passages.
The recording itself is pretty decent as I received it. However, it ran a little fast and was somewhat
boomy as I had mentioned. After ripping to FLAC from my source CD-Rs, I used Audacity to
add some bottom-end, remove some treble with an EQ curve, amplified 3% and slowed the show
overall by 2%. I realigned the track markers to better coincide with the actual start of songs,
segues and/or Ian's brief song introductions.
Sound is always subjective but I'd give it a B+. I tracked the soundcheck as track "00" so that,
if anyone wishes to burn a CD copy without the soundcheck, the start of the actual performance
will begin with the intro of the show, track "01".
Please share and keep lossless among the sharing collective.
