Joan Armatrading
with Chris Wood and Craig Jeffrey as support
The Sage Gateshead
14th October 2012

The full show including both supports. I am not the greatest Joan Armatrading fan but both the Mrs and me are huge Chris Wood fans so it was mainly to see Chris Wood that we went to this gig. I was quite interested in seeing how Joans crowd reacted to Chris and vice versa.

The Sage is a magnificent looking and sounding venue, no matter where you sit the sound is brilliant. It can at times though produce a somewhat sterile atmosphere. For the 2 opening acts there was quite a loud air conditioning noise. This tour took in 56 dates. Joans intention was to select 56 regional representatives to open the show in their area. Craig Jeffrey was the 19th of 56. Chris Wood was offered the tour after meeting Joan at the 2011 BBC radio Folk Awards where he won the awards for "Best Original Song" for "Hollow Point", his song about the killing of Jean Charles de Menezes by the London Metroplolitan Police and also "Best Folksinger".

Pre-recorded announcements were made to announce both Craig and Chris and Joan didn't mention them at all which was a little sad. Craig did remarkably well, obviously performing to a far larger crowd than ever before. He is obviously rated as his EP was produced by Donald Shaw of Capercaillie. Chris seemed bemused at times by Joans audience and was far from his usual self although he put on an excellent show after first of all singling out a person who opened a tube of Pringles just as he was about to start. Joan didn't really communicate much with the audience but did put on a superbly professional show, ably assisted by a very good band which featured some of the late and very great John Martyns backing musicians. The show consited of a lot of her well known back catalogue as well as songs from her new CD. There are some very strange noises from someone near me in the crowd during the applause for Joan, not certain whether they were cries of pain or pleasure!!

I could have uploaded the show in separate batches but the idea of having Craig and Chris as support was to get then listened to by a far wider audience so it's being uploaded like this. If you choose to be selective on your downloads that is up to you.
