My friend Kevin worked in a small studio in NYC in '92
and I was back home in Jersey for Thanksgiving. Kevin
said a guy he knew worked the board for this band with
this chick that was the second coming of Janis Joplin
(a bit of an overstatment but not far off). He said
we could go hang out with them and then check out
their set. We headed into the city got dinner in
Little Italy, along with some herb, and walked down to
the Wetlands.We arrived at like 9PM met up with Kevin's
friend, Sal I think his name was, went downstairs and
met the band. Joan and the rest of the band were very
down to earth good people. A little later I heard someone
singing across the room and it caught my ear because it
was an unusal choice of songs. I quickly realized it was
Joan so I walked on over and said to her "thats Gram
Parsons". She said she used Hickory Wind as a kind of
warm up before she goes on. I said that it was a nice
choice of songs and would love to hearher do the whole
thing onstage. She said she would try to fit it in
somewhere in her set and off she went.
That night Joan blew me away, I remember thinking that the
NYC music scene was coming back with a vengence. The best
part of the night came at the end while hanging around
after the show my friend Kevin turned up with a small
little tape in his hand and said "I'll have a copy for you
in the morning"
I never met Joan again but I've been a fan ever since.
A few years later I found the God is One of Us stuff to be
alittle odd, but I guess thats how the music business works.
Anyway I hope everyone likes this as much as I do.
