Joan Osborne played at Schrott Music Center on the campus of Butler University, Indianapolis, IN September 22, 2017 in support of her latest studio album, Songs of Bob Dylan. It's a medium sized venue with good sound and sight lines but the good acoustics also meant that loud clappers and wah-hoo-ers were very audible as well. Joan also encouraged applause for her piano player in some songs - all of which led to editing challenges. I had a very loud clapper on one side and seemed to be surrounded by vocalizers who got louder as the night wore on. Recorded from 6th row center.

A bit about the editing. I've recorded at this venue before so I knew to set the levels quite low but even so the applause pegged the meters at times while the music was much less loud. Joan's talking even quieter. Where applause was after/between songs I just lowered the volume and hard limited the claps. Claps during songs were hard limited and after each song was processed I normalized the song individually. This may give some volume differences between songs but it was the best I could do without altering the music content. This was recorded at 24-48 and not downsampled. Therefore it is not burnable to CD without further processing but there is also head room if someone wants to further edit or do dynamics processing to suit their preferences. Samples will be provided.
The main program consisted of interesting Dylan covers with only the two encore songs being Joan's hits. After the show Joan sat at the merch table and autographed items and was very nice to her fans.

I was a Joan fan early on and I'm old enough to remember Highway 61 and Rainy Day Women when they were originally released by Dylan and they were always favorites of mine. I found these interpretations of Dylan to be interesting and very satisfying. If you enjoy this recording, support the artist by seeing her live and buying her music.
