Joan Osborne
with The Holmes Brothers
Waterfront Blues Festival
Portland, OR.
July 6, 2014

Another year of WBF recordings. Recorded from KBOO FM in Portland, OR. A great lineup again this year. I was looking forward to Greg Allman's set, but he had to pull out due to sickness. Oh well, I wouldn't have been able to share him here anyway. Seems to be much more DJ talking this year, interrupting some music. I just left it in rather than trying to edit each show. Feel free to make any changes you wish for personal use.

I may need help with some of the set list's as I don't know all the bands.

Enjoy, twofthrs

A Kentucky native, Joan Osborne has sold millions of albums and garnered multiple Grammy nominations throughout her 15-year career. Osbornes singing career took off while attending NYUs film school. Inspired by singers like Billie Holiday and Etta James, Osbornes gutsy, passionate vocals turned One Of Us, a track from her major label debut, Relish, into a massive MTV and radio hit. The disc went on to sell 5 million copies worldwide and led to numerous Grammy nominations. Osborne has performed as a member of the Grateful Dead, toured with the Dixie Chicks and The Funk Brothers, appeared in the acclaimed documentary, Standing in the Shadows of Motown, and has released a childrens album and a country record. Her latest release, Bring It On Home, is a collection of classic blues, R&B and soul covers. Joining her on the CD are Barbecue Bob Pomeroy (harmonica), Allen Toussaint (piano), Jimmy Vivino, The Holmes Brothers and Rufus Thomas daughter, Vaneese Thomas.

Regarding her partnership with The Holmes Brothers, Osborne says, I knew when the time was right and my voice was ready, I wanted to make a recording like this one. Bring It On Home, which received a Grammy nomination in the Best Blues Album Category last year, is an apt titlefor Osborne, Home marks a return to her musical roots. I cut my teeth in New York blues clubs, singing songs like this, she remembers. Despite her long history with the music, it was only recently that the singer felt like she was ready to put some of those standards on record. Theres a texture and richness to these songs that singers dont have right away, that I didnt have when I started out, she says. But the more Ive done this, the more tone and depth Ive developed. This was the time.
Guest stars on the Home album include her touring companions, The Holmes Brothers who just released Brotherhood (Alligator Records). Says Osborne, To hear those harmonies, that group of voices, it was such a pleasure. They were mentors to me. Ive been fortunate to play with them live and produce some of their stuff

Over the course of their 30-plus year career, The Holmes Brothers have been feeding souls with a joyous and moving blend of blues, gospel, soul, R&B, rock n roll, and country. Their three-part harmony singing, mixing Wendells gruff and gravelly vocals with Popsys soaring falsetto and Shermans rich baritone, brings the soul and spirit of gospel music into everything they perform. Equally gripping is the rhythmic foundation laid down by Shermans bass playing and Popsys drumming, perfectly complimenting Wendells blues-soaked guitar solos and church-inspired piano playing. The band easily blends Saturday nights roadhouse rock with gospel fervor and harmonies. The Holmes Brothers have won multiple Blues Music Awards and performed with the likes of Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Keith Richards, Al Green, Ben Harper, Levon Helm, and Odetta.
