Notes: Another steamy night at Gruene Hall - the first day
of summer - another fine Joe Ely Band show. Joe and Co.
came on a little late, so the sweaty crowd was ready to
roll. Right off the bat you can hear an impatient, possibly
overserved woman nearby urging the boys to "pick it up.
Let's go." We were all rewarded soon enough. Pretty
standard setlist - good to see "BBQ & Foam" kind of back
in the regular rotation, and "Cold Black Hammer" has
been getting some renewed love lately ... song really suits
Joe and the band with its hammer-to-chisel, oil pump jack
groove. At least one request was granted - Joe was pondering
some options, seemed to decide on one, and just before he
started, someone yelled "Billy The Kid" ... and off they went.
Good gig. As always, we give thanks to Joe and all the Ely
Band boys over the years for the magic nights of music and
memories. Continued thanks go to The Coin for his now-retired
surrogate mics that captured so many great shows and pal
D. Ortiz for the current loaners. Enjoy. On with the show ...
