source: master audience tape
lineage: Sony TC-48 mono cassette deck (built in mike) >
Maxell UD 90 min. cassette > soundforge 4.5 > FLAC 6 > torrent.
(the last 10 min. + was recorded on a pre-recorded tape
so isn't as good sound, but not too bad.
first seeded in 2008, then for 2009 reseeding a flac > wav >
flac (sb's aligned) reconversion was done to remove the sbe's.
this is part of glasnostrd19's Jazz Masters series. Another 1st time
seed from a master, of a master in concert. Not quite complete, the
beginning of 1st song cuts in and there's a tape flip splice but this
is most of both sets, each set runs about 50 minutes or so. I went to
this show mainly hoping that McLaughlin would be there, and even if
not, that I'd hear "Follow Your Heart" which McLaughlin plays sometimes
(very nice song) and appears on the "Joe Farrell Quartet" album released
in 1970. (I didn't know that at this time, thought it was his recent album)
Oh well, nothing of the kind happened, but it was my only time seeing Joe
Farrell's group live, part of a 3 (maybe 4) night stand at Jazz Workshop
and it was good, some jazzy, some funky. His wiki discography lists
an album in 76 and another in 79, nothing in between (but very busy with
Chick Corea's work in 78) and none of these players are listed in his
credits (which do list most of the personnel on his albums) I do have a
live version of Follow Your Heart, the 1st song I ever knew by title of
JFQ, but not by the JFQ. (it's posted- McLaughlin/Hellborg duo) I've never
heard Joe do it, this recording isn't what I'd call a "gem", but quite
enjoyable. the Jazz Workshop was about the size of a good sized living room.
there is not alot of crowd noise and all the instruments come through clearly.
The last 10 minutes were recorded on a previously pre-recorded cassette
and not quite as clear as the rest but not a big difference.
There's not alot around of this band, especially from this era, so if you
like a good sax, you should check this out. The instruments all come through
clearly and this recording can be enjoyed at quiet or louder volume. I think
it was done on a tc-48, not a bad little deck and the mike in it did okay
for jazz shows.
I don't know about his more recent releases, but his 1st 4 are essential
jazz classics- Joe Farrell Quartet (w/Corea, McLaughlin, Holland, DeJohnette!)
Outback (Corea, Buster Williams, Elvin Jones, Airto), Moon Germs (Herbie Hancock,
S. Clarke, Jack DeJ.) and Upon This Rock (Hancock, Joe Beck, Herb Bushler,
Steve Gadd and Don Alias). he also did a couple more after that with Joe Beck
and later with George Benson. Farrell also plays on "Return to Forever" (72)
and Billy Cobham "Spectrum" albums (very well in all the above, and here too).
do not sell this recording.
Trade freely, losslessly and gaplessly.
