The Performance:

Joe Jackson revisits his "Jumpin' Jive" jazz roots on "The Duke", an album comprised of Duke Ellington standards
brilliantly arranged (albeit "mash-ups") by Mr. Jackson himself. Joe's talents as an arranger are showcased by
the evening's performance including a rousing rendition of "Caravan" performed in Farsi by Iranian singing
sensation Sussan Deyhim. His band featuring clasically trained jazz violinist Regina Carter are aptly up to
the task, often swapping instruments mid-song without missing a beat. Highlights include Ms. Carter trading
phrases with multi-instrumentalist, Allison Cornell on viola. Joe's talents as a singer/songwriter come through
on his own Night & Day classics "Breaking Us In Two" and "Steppin' Out" as well as his earlier tunes, "Is She
Really Going Out With Him?" and "Sunday Papers". Highlights for me included the simply sweet piano version of
"It's Different For Girls" and the Pachelbel riff of "Home Town" from the oft-overlooked mixter_ fav "Big World".
Also, the languid Zydeco infused Ellington classic "Mood Indigo" and the Preservation Hall sound of "Rockin' In
Rhythm" were sublime. The entire show was fantastic!

The Recording:

*The first two songs had to be boosted +12 dB. Afterward, levels are fairly dialed. Sorry for the level shifts after
"It's Different For Girls". I had a power clapper to my left rear (one row back five seats to the left). I detenuated
his peaks as much as possible without taking the treble out. Hence the EX- / VG+. Note to audiences: "Don't cup your hands,
please!" I noted to my brother after the show that he sounded like a bear trying to get a candy bar out of a tree! I'm
sure he drove the couple in front of him bonkers because they left prior to the encore. The omnis picked up the nice warm
tones of this beautiful historic 20's-era theatre in the heart of downtown L.A. Joe's vocals sit in the middle of the mix
most of the time. From my vantage it was sometimes difficult to discern what he was saying while speaking to the audience.

Of Note:

Joe often encouraged the audience to applaud the band and even to clap along with some of the tunes. This seemed entirely
contradictory with earlier reports that he would sometimes admonish or eject audience members for cheering at inappropriate
times during the performance. My college roommate related a time that he saw him in Rome during the "Night & Day" tour. Joe
told his Italian fans to "Shut Up! I fucking know my name!" when they were cheering for him. I had also heard stories that
audience members were ejected for clapping during the "Big World" sessions. Truly a taper's artist! I presume Mr. Jackson has
mellowed over the past 30 years.

A word on tracking:

Seeing as this was largely a jazz performance, I decided to track most numbers on Joe's count-ins. I left his preceding
comments at the end of the previous number if only to allow you to get to the song in a more immediate manner. Fades were only
applied at the beginning and the end of the recording. A disc split is suggested after Track 11.

Enjoy,
