Taper notes:
Next up in my Jazzfest Appreciation Series, for BARN41, I present to you the opening set of the Joe Krown Trio at Tipitinas on the 2nd Sunday night of Jazzfest '08. This was their opening set for the fest-closing Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk marathon, which I presented as BARN37.

Setting the scene for this one -- as always, Sunday night comes around and we were exhausted. We had already planned to hit Tipitina's for the Dumpstaphunk show, so Jen & I made sure we got there a little early as I'd heard that the Joe Krown Trio, though I wasn't familiar with the band's namesake, was to include Walter "Wolfman" Washington, who I was familiar with and definitely wanted to see. So as we're waiting on line to get in, none other than Mike Gordon walks by us (bass in hand). We engaged him in coversation a bit, and he told us a story about how he just got the new bass that he was carrying but lost it in a cab that day and then managed to track it down again. Lucky, Mike. I thought maybe he'd sit in with Dumpstaphunk (though with 2 of the best bassists in New Orelans -- Tony Hall and Nick Daniels already in Dumpsta, it might be a bit of a bass overload!), but little we I know that he was scheduled to be the bassist for the Joe Krown Trio's entire set!

Anyway, this is a nice tight little set from the Trio Plus 1. Mike plays as if he were a full time member of the band, and the particular bass he was playing (that I don't believe I've ever seen him play again) sounded really nice and puchy with a crisp high end. And it was nice to hear is playing on Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and Bill Withers' "Use Me" which is a particularly bass-groove heavy song. I only wish they had more time to play, but alas, Russell had to get down to play a PBS gig somewhere else.

I am not familiar with all of the band's song titles, but did guess at some and knew some of the cover songs. Feel free to correct me if you know better.

Keep your eyes peeled for more from my Jazzfest Appreciation Series -- it looks like it's going to be continuing for a nice little while. :-)

Enjoy!

Scott
