Notes:
The 20th annual ProgDay weekend was kicked off by
a solo set from Finneus Gauge, Land of Chocolate and
Damn Fine Coffee composer John Buzby. He hit the stage
with a single keyboard and a microphone and belted out
songs for about an hour.
The "bandmates" that he mentions at the beginning of
the set were members of the other two bands who were
still loading in. Wanting to get the show started on
time, John began playing while they continued to set up.
Unfortunately I had a couple chatterboxes sitting to
my left, so starting around a third of the way into the
set, you'll probably hear one of them in particular - she
just poured out a non-stop stream of inane babble
that got louder and louder until her friend finally went
to use the bathroom near the end of the set. She's not
as annoying on the recording as I had feared, but
you can hear her, particularly during the quiet bits.
I apologize for not being able to name most of the
songs - I'm not real familiar with Buzby's bands, despite
having seen both Finneus Gauge and Land of Chocolate before.
Any help filling in the set list would be appreciated.
About ProgDay:
ProgDay is an outdoor festival of progressive rock
that has been held annually since 1995. In 1996 it
was expanded from one day to two and has been featuring
anywhere from eight to eleven progressive rock bands
each year since, with a few more prog bands usually
hosting their own Friday and/or Saturday night events
at nearby venues. It's definitely worth the trip if
you're a prog fan and don't mind a little sun and a
little driving around.
The main event takes place at beautiful Storybook Farm,
unless rain forces it indoors (which has fortunately only
happened a couple times in the festival's history). It's
a relaxed atmosphere, where you can listen and watch from
anywhere you want - if you really like a particular band,
you can sit right up against the stage if you want. Some
people listen to the bands while shopping for CDs and
merchandise in the vendor tent or getting food in the
pavilion or playing frisbee in the field behind the audience.
The people are friendly, and the band members often hang out
all weekend taking in the show, selling merchandise and
chatting with fans when they're not on stage. If you're a
prog rock fan and can possibly attend, make every effort to
be there next year. The festival often barely breaks even,
so every ticket sold really helps.

the festival afloat, please visit:
