A solid, sober show from Mr. Doe. Good humor and a cheery attitude pervade this performance. The second half he is accompanied by a small electric band showcasing songs from his first solo album "Meet John Doe"

This torrent is made from a number of recordings of John Doe between 1988-1994. This first one (V1) was given to me and is a soundboard from a live recording made at McCabe's Guitar Shop. All following recordings were made my myself and a friend starting in 1988 with a Walkman Pro and ending in 1994 with a Sony portable DAT.

While John Doe was on again off again with his formative band X, was separating and un-separating with his now ex-wife Exene Cervenka, He played a number of small local venues in Southern California. My friend and I attended many of these venues ranging from drunken rowdy cowboy bars deep in the San Fernando Valley to the venerable and acoustically great McCabe's Guitar shop in Santa Monica. We recorded some of these shows, and that is where the bulk of these sources come from.

John Doe is an amazing performer with a stunning voice and personality that falls somewhere between Phil Ochs and Johnny Rotten. His knowledge and taste in country and traditional music was fundamental while the band X developed it's unique taste of country inspired punk rock. It was not until he started performing as a solo artist that I became aware of his deep feelings for American Music.

His career as an inspired individual singer song writer was not committed to a disc until 1990 with the release of his first solo album entitled "Meet John Doe"

I recently grabbed a John Doe and the Sadies recording, his most current band configuration, and thought it was time I shared some of these recordings here on dime.
