01. Chill Out
02. banter w/ Jay Leno

John Lee Hooker and Carlos Santana appearing as guests on the Jay Leno show.

This tape was purchased in the 1990s from a street vendor or at a flea market, where bootleg cassettes could be bought for a few dollars each with a badly photocopied J-card, often having the wrong date, wrong song titles, etc. Many a misdated recording came from these places, and often a better copy now circulates from whatever was the source of the street tape.

But not this time, it seems. There's a video on YouTube, but no circulating audio, at least not on or near the correct date. (The tape was marked "4/95 but Getty Images provides the actual date on its website. This was a bit of filler on another tape, which does circulate.)

There's no way to know the lineage of this recording, except that there is an NTSC transformer signal at 15.734 kHz, and given its age, it was probably recorded off the television, possibly onto a VHS tape. Then, to cassette and again to cassette using high speed dubbing. For all of that, it didn't suffer too much, and a little EQ helped give it some shine.

Thanks to Rob Robles for picking this one up.

Enjoy!
