comments:
this was one of the best double bill concerts of the decade.
I held off on posting this part of it until remembering I had
fixed the flaws that were in some parts of this recording
(by monoizing short sections) enough to make this sound pretty
good. It's a good set in the Big Apple, recorded from a decent
but not great seat, good enough to hear all the instruments.
It's not everyday that John McLaughlin is an opening act. he
was in 1976 for Weather Report with Shakti (BIG mistake there,
sometimes acoustic John is more electric than electric jazz...)
and in this show opening for a couple of his (countless) former
tourmates and a young rising star. I think this is the whole set
and it was a good one. There was an official release of this tour
recorded in London ("live at Royal Festival Hall" released in 1990)
which is also nice music, with different performances of at least 4
songs in this concert. this version of blue in green is about
3 times longer than the official one, and it's a very nice version of it.
Trilok Gurtu joined McLaughlin for his trio engagement in 1988
with Jonas Hellborg, then Jeff Berlin on bass, later Dominique
DiPiazza, through much of 1992. (then there was free spirits.)
John McLaughlin's career is like a song that goes on and on.
this was about the halfway point of it (so far). It must have been
guitar night at the Palladium. 4 of the finest, all in one show.
this part of it also has a solid bassist and percussion guru.
thanks to Phil J. in R.I. for making the master source recording.
do not sell this recording.
