Comments:

Considering the era and the recording equipment, this is a pretty good recording from John Mellencamp's outstanding 1991-92 world tour promoting "Whenever We Wanted." I saw his show (probably the same setlist) about a week later in Chicago and was blown away because the setlist was literally wall-to-wall singalong "hits" -- the guy really owned the pop charts in the 1980s, and prior to his mid-1990s heart attack, was one of the best live acts around.

This performance for the New York crowd was high-energy and top-notch, as one would expect, and the recording captures it pretty well. It's got the sonic limitations one would expect given the gear used (limited high end, some distortion) but overall very listenable. There are a couple of audience members behind the taper who have an annoying and distracting conversation in the middle part of the show; once that clears up, this is a pretty good listen.

Sonically, this isn't one of the best Mellencamp recordings around, but then, there aren't really that many recordings in general circulation so this may be of some interest.

Many thanks to the anonymous taper for his generosity.

Mp3 samples are included in the comments.
