I hand scrubbed hundreds of individual claps, whistles, yells, and chair squeaks from this recording for all of our enjoyment.

Recorded, transferred (9/7/2013), tracked (1/17/2020), mastered (4/8-9/2020), and posted (4/9/2020) by Scott Bernstein

Taper notes:
Well, here's a BARN series release that I started 6 1/2 years back when I broke the cassette out among the batch of "high priority" cassettes that I really wanted to transfer and circulate. This show in particular felt like a really good one to get out because, frankly, there isn't a ton of John Prine shows that circulate and because I really wanted to hear it myself (it had been 20+ years since I'd recorded it and I really wanted to hear the show). This is one of only two times that I saw the man in concert (the other was 10+ years later for the taping of Elvis Costello's "Spectacle" TV series); and make no mistake -- the man was a true legend. His songwriting ability is unparalleled and is one of the few writers who could go from writing heartbreaking songs with the very deepest pathos ("Hello In There", "Sam Stone" and of course his most famous song "Angel From Montgomery") to ones that are laugh-out-loud hilarious ("It's A Big Old Goofy World", "Dear Abby") or slyly political ("Your Flag Decal...").

Unfortunately it took his untimely death due to Coronavirus complications to get me to polish it off. Luckily this show was well along in my pipeline (transferred back in 2013, tracked out in early 2020) and generally sounded really good. It suffered from the same problem that many recordings with quiet music suffer from when you're not REALLY close to the speakers -- lower volume music and loud between-song (or during song) crowd noise. I spent about 2 days working those problems out in the mastering process, plus I scrubbed out a TON of claps, did my best to minimize a whole bunch of obnoxiously loud yells and whistles, and even had to deal with something I've never had to deal with before -- semi-loud squeaks from the nearby plush seats as people shifted around or got up out of their seats for drink or bathroom runs (this was many many years before The Beacon was renovated and that problem was taken care of). I actually had to spectrum analyze each squeak to get rid of it. You'll still hear some occasional squeaks (so don't think it was a problem with the cassette playback that you're hearing) that I didn't remove (or wasn't able to fully get rid of), but I took care of the worst of them.

The setlist from this short set was interesting enough -- it definitely eschews many of his most well-known songs (who could imagine that he'd ever walk out onstage and NOT perform "Angel From Montgomery" or "Illegal Smile" or "That's The Way That The World Goes Around" or even some amazing compositions from his Grammy-winning album from the previous year like "You Got Gold" or "Jesus The Missing Years" -- or any one of so many other incredible songs he'd written over the years); but we do get some amazing stuff like "All The Best", "Storm Windows", "Dear Abby, "...Big Old Goofy World", "Souvenirs", "Sam Stone", the catchy "Sins Of Memphisto", and "Hello In There". After the time period of this show, Prine continued to have a career resurgance and proceeded to release amazing albums that hold their own among his classics -- like Lost Dogs And Mixed Blessings (with amazing songs like "Lake Marie", "Ain't Hurtin' Nobody", "Quit Hollerin' At Me", "He Forgot That It Was Sunday"), In Spite Of Ourselves (an amazing album of duets with female singers like Iris DeMent and Lucinda Williams), and Fair And Square ("Crazy As A Loon", "Taking A Walk", "Some Humans Ain't Human").

This show was part of (in retrospect) a very strange double bill where an absolute legend with decades of amazing music and accolades (John Prine) was the opening act for an up-and-coming act (3 albums into their career) -- Cowboy Junkies. And don't get me wrong -- at the time Cowboy Junkies were my primary motivation to get out to this concert (and the songs featured here from those albums are still as enduring to me as they were them -- and this was at the peak of their career; though they have released dozens of albums after this show, and I've seen them at least half a dozen times since then); but John Prine's set is the golden nugget that came out of this night. Also note that he came out with the Junkies to perform a duet (which I believe he performed with them on every night of the tour) on the beautiful "If You Were The Woman And I Was The Man".

For what it's worth, I have not yet transferred the Cowboy Junkies set (unfortunately)...but will hopefully get to it one day.

I hope you all enjoy BARN212, a gem of a recording of a true American treasure that I made nearly 28 years ago but nobody but me has heard since then!

RIP John. We will miss you greatly. :( Damn you COVID-19.

Enjoy!
