Johnny Winter in 1986 - let's warm things up!

Paradiso, Amsterdam, Netherlands on January 31, 1986 + Capitol Theater, Passaic, New Jersey on November 14(?19?), 1986

Continuing on my goal to present you remarkable JW performances (in chonological order by year), then came 1986. My fave recording of this year is none of the chosen for this torrent, but these ones are pretty good and share the second prize. I couldn't opt for only one to torrent first, and decided to pack them together. Also their length fit perfectly to make a double CD. Watch out and don't be fooled by "audience recording" tag... take a listen on the samples, both recordings are very enjoyable ones, you'll feel you would be with your friends on the crowd some feet away the band. (and for those curious, my fave '86 performance is from December 5, uploaded about a year here on DIME).

"let's warm things up" says Johnny on the first seconds on both recordings and it's a "sign" to not simply things warmed up but became hot, VERY VERY HOT (just remembering my fave Led Zeppelin performance, from the March 24, 1973, present on the bootleg "not warm, it's HOT!). Some other performances with the same "sign" were just on the same high level.

On early 1986 Johnny went to Europe to promote his current LP (second on Alligator) Serious Business, released September 1985. All these European performances were excellent and here we have the last one, on a great venue, another remarkable one that pushes the artits & the crowd. The great rendition of "my time after while", the guitar solo on "bony moronie" ("pinching" the strings) and the triumphant comeback of "sweet papa john" (instead of the another "current" slow blues "murdering blues") make this performance so special. Not to say the "highway 61 revisited" my best-loved tune played by JW that ALWAYS chills my spine and stand up my arms hair.

Aren't you warmed up enough? Really not? So let the second show roll and you'll be BURNT DOWn in your pants! I known that I shall be very responsible saying this but I may not dumb: MUST HEAR!

Me and most JW fans, sharing the same opinion that he was best on 1978-1993 period, point out that he has some highs over the highs on 1979, 1984, 1987 and 1991. Going further, on 1987 he reached the peak. Hang on, I'll upload some of them on the next weeks.

However Johnny is NOT a common mortal and his best year did not start out on January, but on November 1986 and ending on November 1987. Simply put, the best performances of the best guitar player, EVER - c'mon, this is MY text.

Promoting "Third Degree" LP (third & last for Alligator) released on September '86, Johnny put a high octane gas on the band machinery, Tom & Jon were playing off to follow Johnny. In this November concert the high speed & gutsy playing is incredible. First time I heard it I believe it was a faulty recording. It was not. If you still settled since the first notes of the strong "Succotash" rendition, through the rocker "sound the bell", the astonishing "don't take advantage of me", and the beauty of "third degree" then on "highway 61 revisited" you'll have all your bones broken; hands down, the albino guitar master did it again. Even wild hard rocker versions of "johnny b. goode" and "jumpin' jack flash" will sound banal after these.

Both recordings came from Jeff James (roryglzep, many thanks to him). The Paradiso recording in cdrs (no lineage) and Passaic on a tape (unknown generation) stating the date November 19. Funny enough Jeff also sent me his November 14 recording in cdr and both have the same recording - the sound on tape is a little better. So, what the right day, 14 or 19? Most trading list out there say 14. But the best source says 19. Does anybody could help on it?

For the tape I used my Sansui Deck D-95M and Creative Live! 24 bits sound card to transfer the analog sound to digital format. And Cool Edit Pro software was used on both sources edit the blancs, fix some minor flaws, adjust the levels and index the tracks.

Set List:

disc 1 (about 79 minutes):

Live at Paradiso
1. succotash
2. don't take advantage of me
3. my time after while [great version]
4. serious as a heart attack
5. bony moronie [with chords of "you really got me"]
6. drum solo
7. bony moronie [conclusion]
8. highway 61 revisited [with "3rd stone from the sun"]
9. sweet papa john [in a blues shuffle rhythm, not usual slow blues]
10. johnny b. goode
11. boot hill

disc 2:

Live at Paradiso con't (about 6 minutes)
1. it's all over now

Live at Capitol Theater (about 72 minutes)
2. succotash
3. sound the bell
4. don't take advantage of me
5. third degree
6. I'm good [brief cut in the middle for a tape flip, almost unnoticeable, the two segments were placed together]
7. mojo boogie
8. highway 61 revisited
9. johnny b. goode
10. jumpin' jack flash

both sources (MP3 samples will be provided): excellent audience recordings. Great atmosphere with howling audience members near the tapers that don't disturb the music but actually it adds a special flavour to the recordings.

Please be patient, my bandwidth is very limited. Another JW torrent upon requests from my list. Audio ONLY please, no DVDs for while. If you've just come aboard the boat, other JW torrents, firstly uploaded by myself, still being seeded:
