Johnny Winter - the bad boy & the voodoo child

Johnny Winter at Toad's Place, New Haven, Connecticut on November 12, 1987

1987, the best of the best, could not go so fast... just one more, with an unique set list. In this performance Johnny forgot then the current song list structure and we have another special night.

Since the usual instrumental warm up song you'll feel something is somewhat diferent. Jon & Tom had a hard job to follow Johnny, he had kept changing the key and song riffs every time. By the end of this first song - "we'll have a good time this evening... yeeaah... we'll have some fun tonight" - Johnny greets the wonderful audience with a laaazy voice; no doubt, he is pretty high! And I believe the crowd is also the same :-)

Johnny was not unaware of his self condition and the Eddie Taylor classic is an appropriated title to label the albino that night. The rarely played "have you ever loved a woman" is almost a slow blues medley, Johnny sings lines of many other blues classics. And, I've known it would happen some day, a song was played twice on the same show. The "second part" of "mojo boogie" is also almost a medley, the first strophe is a blend of "black cat bone", "dust my broom" and other songs.

And we have the "Voodoo Child" medley. I've never known other show that Johnny played this Jimi classic. And the first time Johnny & Jon DID change the guitars while playing, not only one playing the other's instrument. Jon Paris was also in a special night. A female audience member comments to the taper:" the bass player is hot!". The every song long renditions allow Jon Paris to stretch out the solos (on bass, harmonica and guitar) more than a double as usual, showing his spectacular musical abilities.

After all we have just only 5 songs out of 9 tracks - the shortest one was played twice - and besides the excellent sound quality, you'll get a highly enjoyable set. Enjoy as I did!

Set List (about 79 minutes):

1. intro
2. succotash [14+ minutes, with a long bass solo]
3. bad boy [Eddie Taylor classic, 13 minutes version]
4. have you ever loved a woman? [Johnny sings the last verses of the previous song, again, in the end; cut out on the last chords, after 16+ minutes]
5. mojo boogie

medley [10+ minutes long]:
6. voodoo child [after 5 minutes Johnny & Jon stopped playing, only Tom keeps the beat for some seconds, then the guitar return with Jon Paris, Johnny on bass; no more singing; some chords of "purple haze" in the end]
7. jam [Jon on guitar, Johnny on bass]
8. roadrunner [Jon on guitar & vocals, Johnny on bass; Jon also played the guitar riff of Lonnie Mack "wham", twice]

9. mojo boogie [again!]

source (MP3 samplers will be provided): excellent audience recording

It's another recording from a Jeff James' (roryglzep, many thanks to him) original cassete tape (unknown generation). As always, I've used my Sansui Deck D-95M, Creative Live! 24 bits sound card to transfer the analog sound to digital format and Cool Edit Pro software to edit the blancs, fix some minor flaws, adjust the levels and index the tracks.

Please be patient, my bandwidth is very limited. Another JW torrent upon requests from my list. Audio ONLY please, no DVDs for while. If you've just come aboard the boat, other JW torrents, firstly uploaded by myself, still being seeded:
