Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers
Variety Arts Center's nightclub
September 25, 1987 Late Show
Master Audience recording made by Haircut

Aud 1st Gen Master Cassette > CD-R > Wav > TLH Flac 8

Here's the third of the five Jonathan shows I captured on my Aiwa 'walkman' style recorder that
I am finally digitizing. This was in Los Angeles at the now defunct Variety Arts Center (not the more
commonly used 1000 seat theater but the 300 capacity nightclub upstairs). The Modern Lovers line
up is the same as the Bottom Line NYC show I atteneded six months earlier (Johnny Avila, drums and
Brennan Totten, guitar), but this show was a little flat. Don't get me wrong, Jonathan is his usual charming
self but it's less fresh and inspired (in my opinion, Johnny Avila seems to have gotten a little too
comfortable and gets in the way a few times). Maybe it's the "young crowd" he points out when
the house lights are turned up? I would love to hear some fans thoughts on this...
Regardless, it's a good sounding audience tape. This is the whole show except for Ice Cream Man as noted in
the track listing. The tape is damaged (you can hear it at the end of The Neighbors) and it's unlistenable
(but I was also lucky in that the tape flip happened here as well so it's limited to one song only). Enjoy!
