A wonderful, well-balanced recording of Joshua Redman playing with a steller ensemble. Lots going on here. His horn work is tremendous but everyone else gets a chance to steps out front, too.

Although Theater of the Living Arts is a bit larger than the typical jazz club, this recording has the same quiet music / loud applause profile as many audience jazz recordings. For example, average RMS loudness was about -24 dB, while peak levels approached 0 dB. To deal with this, Ozone 5 was used to boost the overall dynamics without putting the applause through the roof. The result is easier to hear without diving for the volume control at the end of each solo.

Suggested disc split before Soul Dance.

Thanks to StPatrick for the DAT copy and cover art.

Enjoy!
