"Bayern 3"-FM host during this festival was Fritz Egner - he started his career
early 1970ies working as audio engineer at AFN Munich. Since 1974 he was hosting
regularely AFN radioprogramms and -shows and improved his skills in the English
language. In 1979 he changed his job, joining "Bayern 3" as radio host, and was
later working both as radio AND TV-presenter - he's well known as specialist for
60/70ies, mainly Soul & Black Music.

So let's continue with DAY 2 - ACT 3:
============================

Tervetulleiksi Suomen fanit ! Tässä noin vitun hyvä musiikki ! Menettää järkensä !!

Jukka Tapio Karjalainen (born 1957 in Helsinki) is a Finnish singer-songwriter.
His first album came out in 1981 and he has been called the "Bruce Springsteen of
Finland" [Prof. Jukka Savolainen - see article included below]. "J." states that his
music is a mix of "Blues, Rock´n´roll, Folk, Country, Soul, Funky, New Orleans stuff."
He also listened to old-time musicians like Tommy Jarrell and Clarence Ashley while
learning the 5-string banjo.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Karjalainen

This here is a RARE early 1980ies Central Europe recordings of "J." and his
band - The Black Glasses (Mustat Lasit) - and they TRULY BLEW US AWAY !
The professors comparison with BRUUUUCE flaws, IMO there was FAR more
SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY & THE ASBURY JUKES on stage, back then - with all them
bluesy stuff they played, and this incredible "horn section". And they
had Jukka, called "J." - a baby-face in early 1980ies (there are some
videos on U-tube !), and a gifted songwriter, harmonicaplayer, frontman,
shouter and whipper-in par excellence !!

About the place of event:

The venue was the famous good old "KOMM", to be exact the "KOMMunikationszentrum Nürnberg",
from 1973 until 1997 a thorn in the flesh of Bavaria's unity party - and WHAT a thorn...

But that's history now, here are a few German articles of what happened back in those days:

http://www.medienladen-ev.de/filme/zeitung3.pdf
http://www.franken-wiki.de/index.php/Komm-Massenverhaftungen

Since January 01, 1998 (and after some kind of renovation) the new name is "K 4", standing
for: "Kunst, Kultur, Kino und Kommunikation" (art, culture, cinema and communication).

Lots of pics & scans included in the folder...

Our beloved 'Concertbüro Franken' (CBF - Harasim & Ballreich) was the local organizer &
promoter for all four venues during the whole festival - their first really big "event"
(including this European FM-broadcast...) after their start in September 1981 (and in-between
organizing & promoting a few dozen smaller concerts of mainly regional or German acts).

May 12, 1984 (the date)

Nuremberg (German: Nürnberg) is a city in the German state of Bavaria, in the administrative
region of Middle Franconia; it is Bavaria's second largest city after Munich. It is situated
on the Pegnitz river and the Main-Danube Canal, and is located about 105 miles north of Munich,
the population is over 500.000 (as of 31. January 2008). The town is also the Center of the
Metropolitan Region Nuremberg.
When one thinks of Nuremberg, they usually have things like Bratwurst, Gingerbread, Toys,
Christkindlesmarkt, Reich Party Rally Grounds or the Nuremberg Trials in their mind. But the
old town of Nuremberg in the shadow of the towering imperial castle is more than that. Gothic
churches, splendid patricians' houses and romantic corners and spots. An atmosphere of lively
co-existence between medieval and modern, between the past and the present prevails in Nuremberg.

the audio quality on it is FAR from 'awesome sounding'

it sounds "pretty average" for a master FM/SB - maybe
"pretty darned poor" for a supposed FM master tape...

Interview with J. Karjalainen

Q: When and how did you decide to become a musician?

In 1980 I just wanted to make a single record as a keepsake for myself and here we are!
I didn't decide anything.Things just happened.

Q: What musicians or artists did have a major influence in your life / work?

Maybe the old country bluesmen like Robert Johnson and Mississippi John Hurt.
As a teenager I listened to old recordings and tried to learn how to play guitar.
J.J. Cale was another great influence.

Q: What are the positive and negative aspects of being a musician / singer (in Finland)?

Positive: A guy like me can hit the top of the charts. // Negative: -

Q: How could you qualify your style of music?

My music is a mix of styles I like. Blues, Rock'n'roll, Folk , Country , Soul, Funky,
New Orleans stuff. Plus finnish words. That makes The J. Karjalainen - style.

Q: During the years how has your musical style evolved?

Not very much. The music is mainly the same as I started. The words have changed a little.

Q: How do explain these changes?

Im not a teenager anymore.

Q: Have you ever considered the possibilty to change totally your style of music?
If so, what style of music would you choose?

Sometimes I've tried, but it always sounds the same! Music is like hand writing.
You can't change it, not even if you want to. I don´t think about any styles when
I`m playing or making new songs. I just do everything that sounds good to me.

Q: What are stories/topics you tell/treat in your songs?

I do as most of the blues and country musicians usually do:
I sing about my own life.
Sometimes I tell fairy tales.

Q: What is your favorite song in your repertoire and why?

"Villejä Lupiineja" (Wild lupine ) is the song I'm never tired to play.
It sounds good to me night after night.

Q: Do you tour regularly?

Nowadays I'm doing some 50 gigs per year.

Q: Do you actually prefer performing your music live or in a studio?

I like it live. I really enjoy touring with my (actual) band, the great Electric Sauna.

Q: During the process of making an album or a song, what is the moment that you prefer?

Maybe the greatest moment in the songwriting process is to come up with a good text idea
which suits the music. The music comes very naturally to me. The right words are harder to find.

Q: What kind of music / What artists do you currently listen?

I´m learning to play 5-string banjo. This summer I've listened to a lot of american folk music.
Old timers such as Tommy Jarrell, Clarence Ashley and Dock Boggs.

Q: A stupid question but... what is among all the songs
you've been listening in your life the BEST song?

I've heard hundreds of the world's best songs in my life.

Q: Internet is something interesting for musicians because it gives them the opportunity
to touch a larger audience but it is also a threat for them (regarding the copyrights).
What is your opinion regarding this medium?

I know that I should make a speech against piracy here, but I'm not in that mood right now.

Q: What are your actual and future projects?

Most of the time I just play the banjo. Just for fun. I'm also putting together the compilation
record of my best songs from years 1992-2002. It will be released in the spring. Earlier this
year was released Eduardo & The Brazilian Aeroplane CD which contains my songs in portugiese.
(You should make an interview with Eduardo, he can tell you more of the project!)

Minnesota's Finnish guests find a rude airport welcome...

The musicians say they were subjected to harsh, demeaning
treatment - the U.S. government says it's investigating.
By Jean Hopfensperger, Star Tribune

When three of Finland's most popular musicians, including one described as that country's
Bruce Springsteen, arrived for a recent tour in Minnesota, they expected a quick trip
through airport customs.

Instead, immigration agents at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport subjected
them to more than two hours of interrogation that the musicians considered so harsh and
demeaning that they filed a formal complaint with the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki.

"It was almost three hours of screaming, door-slamming and accusations, according to the
report I received," said Marianne Wargelin, honorary Finnish consul for the Dakotas and most
of Minnesota, which has the second largest Finnish-American population in the nation.

Erkki Maattanen, a filmmaker for Finnish Public Television who accompanied the musicians on
the September trip, said his questioners seemed to think the entourage was smuggling drugs or
intending to work without a permit. "I kept trying to tell them why we were here, but they'd
just yell, 'Shut up!"' he said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials at the airport declined to comment, referring
questions to regional press officer Brett Sturgeon.

Sturgeon said such behavior, if it occurred, would run contrary to the agency's policy that
travelers must be treated in a professional manner. The complaint has not yet arrived at the
Chicago regional office, but when it does, it will be fully investigated, he said.

He speculated that the Finns could have been singled out because they were arriving from
Amsterdam, considered high risk for narcotics trafficking.

The incident began about noon Sept. 13 when the artists were standing in line at the airport,
waiting for their passports to be checked, said Maattanen. They had been invited to the Immigration
History Research Center at the University of Minnesota for a cultural tribute to Finnish-Americans.
They also planned to travel to Thunder Bay, Ontario, and several small towns in Minnesota and
Michigan to meet Finnish-Americans and play music from their homeland.

Finnish Public Television, which was making a documentary about the trip, and the university
paid travel expenses, said Prof. Jukka Savolainen, who was waiting at the airport to meet them.

As the artists waited in line, two immigration agents approached musician Jukka Karjalainen, whom
Savolainen described as "the Bruce Springsteen of Finland" as well as a devotee of Finnish-American
folk music. According to the complaint, they began questioning and yelling at him.

Sniffing dogs

Dogs were brought in to sniff the artists' bags. Each was taken into a separate room for questioning,
which focused on whether they were going to earn any money on their trip.

"They threatened us with severe punishments if we talk to each other," according to the complaint
signed by musicians Ninni Poijärvi and Mika Kuokkanen, "Through the walls, I can hear officers
yelling, screaming. They ask about the purpose of our trip -- except we are only allowed to give
yes-or-no answers. I try to talk about our plans to meet with Finnish-American folk musicians.
Nobody listens. They interrupt me constantly and they yell, 'You are a liar!"'

Meanwhile, Maattanen was being questioned in another room.

"From the beginning, they said I was lying, that these guys were coming here to work," said the
veteran filmmaker, who said he has travelled to the United States at least 15 times without incident.
"They were shouting at me, and people were going in and out of doors. They tried to put you down
mentally, to humiliate you.

"I was ashamed for their behavior," he said.

No apology

The four were eventually released with no explanation and no apology, the complaint said. They
met Savolainen, who had been in an airport waiting room, and who later said he marveled that
immigration agents would think that a wealthy recording artist would travel to the United States
"in hopes of earning money playing acoustic music in rural Minnesota."

Strugeon speculated that uncertainty over the musicians' travel documents may have led to the
questioning. Visitors from Finland are required to carry a valid passport and to fill out a visa
waiver that allows them to stay in the United States for up to 90 days. They cannot work, however.

Strugeon said there may have been some uncertainty about whether the musicians would be
earning money on the trip.

Two of the musicians are slated to return this year and are worried they may face other problems
entering the country, in part because their passports have a big red flag. Immigration agents
initially stamped "Refused Entry" on the passports, said Savolainen, and then later simply
crossed that stamp out with a pen.

And organizers of the national FinnFest2008, which is expected to draw about 7,000 visitors
to Duluth next summer, hope the incident won't keep these musicians from returning to Minnesota.

"There are a lot of people who want to see these musicians again," said Ralph Tuttilla, a St. Paul
musician who hosted the visitors one night for dinner. "That's why some action needs to be taken."
