South Africa: FEAST OF MARIMBA, Goddess of Musical Happiness.

Meanwhile back in 1996, the Boston rock goddess recorded tracks for 'God's Foot,' which was to be her fourth solo album (third if not counting Become What You Are, which was recorded with the Juliana Hatfield Three), intended for 1997 release. Per wiki, after three failed attempts to satisfy requests from Atlantic Records to come up with a "single" that the label could release, Juliana requested she be released from her contract. The label obliged, but kept the rights to the songs produced during these sessions (Atlantic had reportedly paid $180,000 to that point on the recordings).

Juliana went on to release instead the EP, 'Please Do Not Disturb,' on Bar/None Records. 'Please...' made it out on October 21, three weeks before this here Toronto show. Where perhaps due to reportedly high import prices, Juliana discovers during the show only three people in the audience had it.

Featured on that lonely EP and live at Lee's Place, is the song, "Trying Not To Think About it." It was written about the death of Jeff Buckley, which had sadly happened suddenly, last spring.

In the summer of '97 Juliana toured with the first Lilith Fair, an "all-female" pop-rock festival founded by singer Sarah McLachlan. In some quarters Juliana took shit for it and she then even made excuses to the media.

Whereas in my corner I got off so much on the Lilith paths beating to my stoneway, like Paula Cole, Fiona Apple, The Cardigans. Et bien sur Juliana, the hometown girl in the Great Woods, who rained down her goddess guitar, pop blues from up on Lilith hill. I later wrote a book about it, and then handed it to her. I could tell my local empress was unimpressed, but only embarrassed at my even then telling everyone in the record store that hey, look over there - where? - why right here don't you know like...

She's The One & Only Everything... Forget The Sun, She's The Star Of The Planet Earth... I Got No Idols But That Girl, She's Got 'It.'

Or something like that.

"Black wave comes to take me away
I ride it almost to the grave
Landing on a crowded shore, high-fiving
What a trip, I'm better for it, I feel a live sensation

"A heart, a heart that hurts
Is a heart, a heart that works"

...Even when it still doesn't work out...

Juliana will still work it on out.

Here in just another country, she shreds back black to top off the pop art of her heartbeat on the brats in The Queen City, as only she can-can do Canada.

And for that we love our Queen of the Beantown Sweetheart Breakout Scene.
