This show was originally billed as "A Tribute to Bob Marley Volume 2 featuring Junior Marvin of The Wailers." I had seen it advertised in one of the routine emails I receive from The Hamilton, and while it looked interesting, reggae is not really my genre and I wasn't going to drive 90 miles to see this. Two days before the show, another email arrived, and as I scrolled through it, something different caught my eye. This time, the billing included "with very special guest Donovan!" in fine print. Donovan had performed in the area six days earlier (see Volume 21) but something didn't seem right. There was nothing listed on Donovan's web site so I called the Hamilton to confirm. When I was told that Donovan would be opening the show, I bought a ticket. I mentioned this to a few people waiting on line at the venue the night of the show but nobody knew what I was talking about. I gave the same information to the people that populated my table, and once again got the same blank stare. I decided to ask a waiter, but he never got back to me. Hope faded when the house lights went down and Dermot Hussey of Sirius XM Radio came out to introduce Junior Marvin. I gave my neighbors a shrug and settled in for a nice reggae show. Song after song went by, and when Junior introduced his bassist "Donovan Marks," I could feel the good-natured smiles and chuckles of my table-mates behind me. I turned around as much as I could without disturbing the microphones and did the obligatory "head shake of shame." Ten minutes into the encore, I think my head spun completely around when I heard the opening beats of "Mellow Yellow" while Junior Marvin called "the original Donovan" out of the audience. Unfortunately, most of my table had already emptied, so I couldn't share my astonishment with the "non-believers." Donovan emerged from the audience for a decent version of "Mellow Yellow," but "Stir it Up" was a bit of a train wreck, and he wisely handed off the vocals shortly into the song. As Junior explained later, "We never had a chance to rehearse with Donovan...he's very brave to come up here just off-the-cuff." In the end, I'm glad I went. It got me out of my element and gave me my own chance to stir it up.
