WOW! Every once in a while the planets align, the weather cooperates, and the venue and performers mesh to create a very special evening. This was the case MAy 7, 2011 at Whitington Park in Greenwood, MS. An entire afternoon and evening of music in celebration of Robert Johnson's 100th birthday created one of those events that you are glad you did not miss. Well, me, the wife, and a couple of thousand of like minded folks did not miss it and it was about as good as it gets.
The day starts with RJ's grandsons' band, moves on to local talent Jerry Fair, misses the opportunity to see David 'Honeyboy' Edwards (recuperating from pneumonia), continues with Cedric Burnside (grandson of RL Burnside)and Lightnin' Malcolm, light it up with Alvin Youngblood Hart/Kenny Brown (RL Burnside's guitar player)/ ??? Burnside (RL's son), then the day peaks with Keb'Mo solo and finishes with the Warren Haynes Band .......all in amn outdoor venue provided free of charge by the Greenwood Visitor and Convention Bureau. Tell me how it gets any better. And for the group that showed up it proved once again that Mississippi knows a lot about great music and its' roots and also how to have a party! 'Nuff said.
I know I'm biased but I do believe most of you will agree when you hear these shows. A little chatter but the music shines through. First, there is Keb Mo...............
