A Benefit For Buddy Flett

Sony ECM-DS70P > Sony Hi-MD MZ-M100 > Sony 1GB Hi-MD disc > GoldWave v5.23 > flac

Buddy Flett is a Shreveport musician who has been part of the scene since the '70s. Buddy recently had a bout of viril encephalitis which has incapacitated him as a musician, which has all but halted his income.

Stalwarts of the Shreveport music scene came together to stage a benefit concert to help their friend out.

One of Shreveport's local sons is Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Kenny Wayne headlined the show and was accompanied by, among others, Stevie Ray Vaughan's drummer from Double Trouble, Chris Layton.

Also appearing on stage with Kenny Wayne was Hubert Sumlin. During Hubert's second song he appeared to be shocked by a poorly grounded microphone and left the stage soon after.

The highlight of the evening for anyone who cares for Buddy Flett was Buddy's playing and singing with Kenny Wayne on "Dust My Broom".

After Buddy's performance, Shreveport's mayor, Cedric Glover, proclaimed April 27th to be Buddy Flett Day in Shreveport from then on!

It was an incredible showing of support for a truly humble and gracious musician who has, himself, helped many people out over the years.

After a rousing version of "Voodoo Child (A Slight Return)", most of the musicians who participated in the benefit, including Buddy Flett, returned to the stage for an all-star jam on the Blues chestnut "Sweet Home Chicago".

Kenny Wayne Shepherd is the currency I'm offering up to the members of DimeADozen but I'm hoping some of you will take the time to investigate Buddy Flett. He's a wonderful human being and a great Blues artist.

You can see and hear him on Kenny Wayne's release "10 Days Out Blues From The Backroads".

You can also check out his MySpace site at http://www.myspace.com/buddyflett where you can hear some of his music and see one of his videos.

And oh, yeah, there is some incendiary playing by Kenny Wayne Shepherd here!
