Davies: "I'm on a low budget. What did you say?"
(He points the microphone at the crowd.)
Crowd: "LOW BUDGET !!"
Davies: (visibly impressed if not a little frightened)
"You don't have to shout."
I was lucky to have worked 2 weeks at the 1st US festival in 1982, although I wasn't backstage at the time the kinks were going on, the story was...
Ray Davies was with Chrissie Hynde in his dressing room trailer and would not come out or talk to the stage director, until just before they went on, about 25 minutes late. Bill Graham went through the roof and was threating to drop them from the lineup. (obviously BS)
They did go on, but Bill graham tried to throw them off stage when their assigned time was used up.
You can hear that didn't go very well, they stopped the song, and then spent the rest of the set taunting Bill Graham. -WhaaayOoo-
Bill Graham comes out to call for a encore, his voice rough from yelling backstage.
Chrissie and Ray's daughter, Natalie Ray Hynde was born 4 months later, January 1983.
